I don't think you need a car if you stay only in the city. They have metro there. But if you rent, driving in Europe is no problem as long as you remember to drive in the right lane and use left lane to pass only. Cars are going fast and it is your responsibility to move to the right and let them go.
If you drive, get a good map. I had GPS with laptop running MS Autoroute and had no problem anywhere in Europe.

Going to Barcelona ? You lucky guy !

Mike already made you a great suggestion. Anthony Gaudi is one of the most famous architects from Spain an his most important buildings are there. Make sure to visit "La Sagrada Familia"
( church ), "La Pedrera", "La casa Batllo" and "El parque Guell"
( park ).

For fun you can walk "Las Ramblas" where there are many open bars and cofee shops. The last portion of "Las Ramblas" is called "La Rambla del Mar" because it ends right in the ocean in front of Colon's monument.

For Nightlife the Maremagnum ( at "La Rambla del Mar" ) has many bars and clubs.

If you want to go to the beach "La Barceloneta" is very popular and that is the best place for meeting young people and beatiful girls... TOPLESS

Do not rent a car, you will not need one, and doesn't matter the rent is cheap, you will spend lots of money on public parking lots. The public transportation is safe and very convinient.
