I have to say I admire your positive outlook on this vehicle. But I really do have a question. If you can afford the Porsche Cayenne at $80 - $90K why not buy an S500 and a seperate truck which you can really use off road such as a Hummer or maybe even a small stripped Land Rover....can't remember the name. Then you'll have the ultimate ride and comfort as well as the weekend toy. No compromises at all.

I just saw the post in the G,ML forum. I am a huge Porsche fan. I have been a PCA member for three years and have been participating in high speed track events since I joined. That gives me two big time vehicular outlets, my off-roading via MB G or Unimog, and a much faster form of having fun in a car:p I think the Cayenne is a great vehicle. It is going to be VERY fast. I doubt even a kompressor equipped ML will have a chance on the road. Is MB going to put a supercharger on the AMG ML? Anyway, it also looks to trump the ML off-road. They have equipped the Cayenne with an adjustable air suspension. I think the maximum raised spec will be over 11" of clearance, not too shabby. Porsche has taken the off-road side far more seriously than I would have expected. The truck features not only the hieght adjustable suspension, but a low range (unlike the X5) AND front, center and rear locking differentials (unlike the ML and Range Rover). They will supposedly be offering an off-road package including skid plates and off-road tires. My bet is that this thing will take you nearly anyplace you want to go, FAST. I would take the bet vs the Grand Cherokee off-road too As for selling to the masses, this is still a Porsche, not exactly mass produced cars. The Boxster may be getting there but the $80k Turbo Cayenne will certainly be a rare bird. The VW version is worth a look. I would be most concerned about the dealer network. They have NO experience with vehicles of this caliber. I have seen better prepared MB dealer struggle hopelessly with the G-class. What will happen at the VW dealerships with all of these tottally new upmarket cars? The Porsche mystique has certainly been questioned with this new offering. I would have preferred to see them continue exclusively with sportscars and racing. However to ensure they are not forced to become part of Ford or GM I am willing to cut them some slack. This vehicle will likely save the company from certain death and spur new product lines, hopefully more sports cars I like it I am waiting for them to show up at the dealers. I would definately consider trading my wifes mostly road driven G500 for a Turbo Cayenne

I have been thinking about the new 2004 E320 (Maybe it will be E350) or even a E500 wagon for myself and old '66 Charger with the Hemi engine. Its funny when you have the funds to buy certain items, now I chose to be low key. I have expressed some very negative opinions here about the whole subject of SUV's. I DON'T object to the vehicles as such. It's the mass hysteria about them. I see too many who buy them "just because". (Too many soda-fountain cowboys). If one has a purpose for such a vehicle, they definatly are the way to go. But to buy one just because it's the trend, well, I guess it's a free country.

I think your generalization applies to MOST SUV purchasers. I am very glad to hear that you are willing to admit that there are some of us that do actually buy vehicles and use them as intended. My Porsche sees the racetrack, definately a purposeful machine. My big BMW sees roadtrips with the family, I hate commercial flights I actually take my big buck, leather lined Geleandewagen off road, way off road as often as I can in all instances. I see the Porsche SUV as one that delivers more on each account than the market has ever seen. It will be seriously fast, I am betting on 0-60 in under 5 seconds for the twin turbo. The adjustable suspension, diff locks and skid plates will make it a formidable tool for those who choose to use it that way. Throw in five door utility, even if it is not the largest in its class, and you have one heck of an entertaining vehicle. It is also been said to handle like a sports car, what more could you ask for? For those who question Porsches initial quality or commitment to serious machines. You need to drive a modern Porsche, preferably the current top model the 911. It is fast, comfortable, fuel efficient, and very well put together. IMO, Porsche has always been the benz of sportscars. Initial quality on many new models has been suspect lately, witness the early ML troubles, Porsche is certainly not the lone ranger here. The manufacture very intense, very German distillments, of the automobile. I expect nothing less than the worldsfinest SUV iteration to date from them. Of course for serious off-roading I am sticking with the G, and a Porsche sportscar for the road. I tend to enjoy the purest of each group.

I don't see any remotely stock Jeeps taking the Rubicon The only thing close to being able to tackle the Rubicon is the new model with its namesake, a Wrangler variant. I would bet that the Cayenne with the off-road package would be the Jeeps equal in any off-road situation, and be much more comfortable doing it BTW, Don't try the below in a Jeep
