Guys and Girls,

I am moving to San Diego in Jan from Wrightsville Bch NC. I am looking into every possible and realistic solution for transporting myself as well as my Vehicle. I have a very small amount of things going with me. Ie: most can fit on a plane. I am open to suggestions and input. I am hoping you guys know of people, companies and or modes of transportation that may be useful to me.

Scenario 1--I fly 200$ Ship Sadie (benz) @1000$ ship bed@___?

Scenario 2--Rent a truck and pull Sadie. 1400$ for truck not including gas, lodging, car dolly.

Scenario 3--Drive Sadie and inherit risk associated with driving 2400 Miles...Sadie has 241,000 miles. She is in great running condition with the exception of a valve tick sometimes at low oil pressure. I may have this repaired via valve job if I decide to drive. This option Cost of Gas --@ $200 I am not thrilled with this option just because of the risk involved.

Scenario 4--Fly $200.ship bed $___?Sell Sadie and purchase and unkown vehicle in SD.. Definately don't like this one ...never the less it is an option.

So far these are the only Scenario's I have come-up with If you guys know of a better way or means please advise. Thanks in advance as always

fly, then ship car. check with www.carmoves.com good people there and cheap. Then forget your bed. Is it a pimp bed? I doubt it. So then go and get one at a thrift store for $50, they're great sometimes.

My father's friend moved from San Jose to Columbus and shipped his car... I remember him saying it was his best choice in bringing his car over with him.

W124AMGguy, Actually it is...I won this bed when I was selling furniture and would never have paid the retail price for it otherwise. Also it is so comfortable that I have a hard time sleeping on a cheap mattress.. so it is definately coming with me..

Alon, so far (as of this morning) the cheapest rate I have gotten for shipping my car is 750$ which doesn't seem to bad..Thanks for checking with your friends dad..

Ken, I too have wanted to drive across the country. It is the most economical solution so long as nothing breaks or falls out..

Flying out and shipping the car and bed is probably the safest bet, unless you also want to do a lot of site seeing on the way.

Btw, are you attending school here?

Ship the car!

When I moved my family to Texas, we owned three cars. The movers put the furniture AND the Jag in the truck, and I drove the family to Texas in the Passport, with the VW hitched to the rear...

The Jag showed up a day later...the furniture was stored for 6 months while we waited for our new home to be built.

Personally I would drive across country.

I did this two years ago when I moved from Mass to San Diego and I loved that trip. It wasn't tiring, we had a chance to stay overnight in several cities (Nashville, Dallas, El Paso, Phoenix) and have lunch in many others.

You could spend the $1000 you saved towards any needed maintenance on your car. Ship the mattress UPS Ground before you leave and it will be there when you arrive. You may also want to convince a friend or two to come out with you. You can share the hotel costs and they can fly back once you've arrived.

I’m with placo1. Take the cash you’d spend for shipping and use it for some minor fixes on Sadie. Have the other stuff trucked or connect a trailer hitch to sadie and pull it all. It will probably be your best opportunity to “do America”

That said, another friend had a similar dilemma and ended up loading his car into the back of a truck along with all his worldly possessions and brought the whole thing cross country. Only problem was finding a place to off load the car!

Geez, for the $750-$1,000 in shipping costs, you could just about pay for a complete valve job and head gasket.

If you decide to drive cross-country and take the southern route (as might be recommended in the winter), I think we should warn you that Texas pretty much counts as its own country.

If memory serves when you enter East Texas near Beaumont, there's a sign that says El Paso is 950 miles.

(I've managed a few side trips here and there while on travel, but never cross-country.)

I say drive. Stop and meet some mercedesshop folk along the way. Savor America, eat in Memphis, sleep under the stars in the Canyonlands, visit the Grand Canyon.
