the lefties want to beat their chest about their first amendment rights that are no more important or permenant than our second amendment rights are...

If they are going to be trying to take away the second amendment rights of the american public they should not be surprised when they lose their 1st amendment rights shortly thereafter.

Think back to Germany.....and keep in mind the gun control laws the lefties have implimented are based upon the Nazi laws that disarmed the German public and let the National Socialist party to take over unimpeaded.

Knives etc are not a weapon that you can kill anonymously with, you have to get fairly close. I also have a reasonable chance of defending myself, even w/o a weapon(personal record 1 in hospital, 1 badly banged up, and one dropped the knife when I nailed him with a pool cue, I used to bounce at some seedy bars) And you are much less likely to kill an innocent, THIS IS A KEY POINT to my opinion.

I realize it won't prevent the wackos, etc. But if it takes 10% off the street it's an improvement.

Punishment, extreme when appropriate. Without the gazillion appeals that clog the courts and make attorney's rich is the best solution.

There were 2 that I saw here in Chicago today, a high school senior (Straight A) killed, and a murder suicide.

How much of freedom are you willing to sell for 10% improvement in security?

I find both sides to be disingenuous on the interpretation of the Second Amendment. Anti-gun people ignore the part about "...the right of the people to keep and bear arms..." and the pro-gun people take that language and stretch it beyond all recognition. I have never studied the issue, so I can't claim to understand the nuance of the pro-gun position, but it seems to boil down to a claim that I can own any weapons I want, including nuclear weapons, and the government can do nothing about it. The most strident pro-gun people also ignore the opening phrase, "A well regulated militia..." I don't know what that phrase means, but it must mean something.

But, as over the top as I find the pro-gun arguments, it seems to me that the Second Amendment and the liberty provisions in other parts of the Bill of Rights confer important rights to keep and bear arms. I don't appreciate those who pretend that those rights are not in the Constitution.

Having said all that, I sure used to enjoy shooting my friend's 44 magnum. A hand-held cannon. Very cool.

There now we're talking! The second amendment doesn't give me the right to own an A-bomb and I don't really have any desire to own a 155 howitzer. As for the "Well regulated militia" you and I are both part of it. Should our country ever be invaded the able bodied citizens will be helping our military.
As for your friends 44 mag have you ever thought about buying one too? It's more fun at the range when you both have one. You can have yours custom tuned without your friend knowing about it then watch his face when you shoot rings around him.

I have no problem with that concept, but you know that there is a large segment of the American population who think only a crazy person would believe it.

I should probably do that. The wife would hate it, though.

Good point. What I should have said is that the really fanatic pro-gun types overstate the dangers of regulating guns. I think they should back off and give some credence to the first two words in the Second Amendment: "Well regulated."

Get her interested in it too. Start her out on a small frame .22 revolver. You would be surprised at the smile on a females face the first time she hits a tin can. You have to watch it with females. Some of them get to be excellent shots and when they beat you in competition they have a way of rubbing salt in your wounds.

It sounds like your wife is a keeper. Does she have a like minded single sister that also likes barbequed pork? :D

I said "single". Not into adulterous affairs especially against some axe throwing King-Kong.
