Wow, I was just there two weeks ago and saw that same sign. It's bolted on pretty good. What else ahve you been doing in Barcelona? It's a great city and there is no where else like it!

I guessed it said "passage of mercedes", but only because thats what it looks like. It is hard to translate Catalan into English without a native speaker at your side as there are no readily available translation books--The language is a kind of half French, half Spanish...If you understand either it is about like reading without your glasses on; you will get the main idea, but the details will be lost.

street of mercedes is the literal catalonian meaning...
but we'd just say mercedes street.
