I emailed the the offeror and asked:
I've never seen a 6.9 with a top speed of 85 mph? They are known to effortlessly cruise at about 120 with the speedo going up to 160. Whats the deal here? -------------------- > > > Question from: jlxxxx > Title of item: Mercedes-Benz : 400-Series > Seller: axxxxx > Starts: Dec-10-02 22:46:52 PST > Ends: Dec-17-02 22:46:52 PST > Price: Currently $1,075.00 > To view the item, go to: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ His reply: i there, you are right. But original cars titled in California had an 85 Miles speedometer as far as I know. I also got a 1979 Texas 6.9 with a 160 MPH speedometer. I do not know why there is that difference. I bought this car as a second car to have parts for the Texas car which has only 69,000 Miles on it. When I got the California one, it turned out to be almost in better mechanical shape than the Texas car. My mechanic drove it home and it really runs strong. I sell this car and later on also the Texas car since I got a 1981 5,800 KM 6,9 out of Germany, which I run into after I got those two cars. I collect cars as a hobby. Best regards ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm convinced..... J

At one point there was a law that limited the speedometer to 85 mph for cars sold in the USA. I suppose the idea was to remove the temptation to "see how fast the car can really go".
In saying that, I don't know the model years affected by this law. Ken300D |

ALL 6.9s had 162mph speedos.
When I get mine out for summer, I'll post some high-speed pics..Until then I'm eagerly waiting for my rebuilt tranny to arrive from MB's California warehouse for the car. This will be tranny, oh....number....4!! Yes, they put out a lot of torque, even with a LIGHT right foot.

As a child I had lots of car books, some from America. Some of the Porsches pictured in the books had 85mph speedos. When I was a kid I couldn't understand... what happened after 85?! or maybe they didn't go that fast? I was really confused.

That is just about the roughest example of a 6.9 I have ever seen. I would cost a fortune it bring it up to the kind of shape it deserves.

I agree about the 85 MPH speedometer. That did start in 1980, so maybe that's a legitimate switch that was done by the dealer rather than a "mileage markdown." What gets me, is how do you expect to sell an M100 w/o showing pics of the engine??? I mean, that's what these cars are all about, and given the rough exterior, you have to wonder...
