Martial Arts
Elau,
Kung Fu is just as outdated as Karate or Tai Kwon Do. When I spoke of a quality black belt I was referring to reading lists, essays, research papers, and superior physical fitness (as in tests, like the military) as well as kata, weapons, punching/kicking skills. In my school I teach Isshin Ryu, (Okinawan) Hapkido, (Korean) and Escrima, (Filipino) as well as several Special Forces systems (Krav Maga, Compression fighting) The difference is that I have taken out the outdated things and innovated things more in accordance with todays self defense. This could easily be applied to Kung Fu also. For instance, in Isshin Ryu, the ancient weapon - the Bo, is brought into modern times by substituting a mop or a broom - something that would be available in modern times. We practice with the traditional Bo for balance, but also use utensils for real life application. Bruce Lee taught "the way of no way" He studied boxing, Asian systems, Greek, French, South American, Wrestling, etc., just to name a few. He desired effective fighting without the constraints of systems. I am a fan of both philosophies. I do kata, I study systems, I innovate. The art side of the martial arts is far more important than the fighting aspects. Philosophy, literature, history, art, and music balance the martial artist into a complete person. In our society, however, violence does exist, and we want to be fully prepared if the time comes to defend self, friend, or family. Robert Davis 10dan Davis Warriordo Academy
