heated wipers??

Is it true that my 1983 380 SEL has some sort of heated wiper system? How does this work and is it on in the summer?

Thumbs up Heated wipers

For the heated wipers I have seen, there is a metal spiral tubing that allows hot antifreeze to run through it. This assembliy is in the washer reserve bottle, which is how the fluid gets heated up.

If it's the same system that's in my E-320 it's as described above with the coil that runs through the washer reserve tank that heats it from the antifreeze out of the radiator.

The tubing that carries the washer fluid from the tank up to the squirt thingies also has a heated metal rod running through it to prevent freezing in the tube as well.

Always be careful not to crimp this tubing!!! I've been told by my mechanic that it's extremely expensive to have to replace either the tubing or the water reserve tank.

As to whether the fluid is heated in warm weather I don't know.

I'm sure my 190E has wires running to the windscreen washer spray nozzles - I assumed there was a small heating element in there, to melt any ice.

Not sure if it is on the '83 SEL's, but on the 560SEL there is a heated bladder and pad that is positioned under the glass at the point where the wipers rest. It can only be seen with the glass out. The function is to prevent the wipers from freezing and sticking to the glass, presumably while driving in snow and ice. It wouldn't help on a cold morning start-up until the car was warmed as engine coolant is circulated through the bladder.

My 88 300CE has a heater at the washer nozzles, check for extra wires running to the nozzles, though the S-class is probably different.

On late model cars, the washer fluid is heated by the coolant by tubes running through the washer tank. Also, the washer nozzles are heated to keep them from freezing.

Subaru has a VERY cool device: heating elements on the windscreen located under the wiper resting positions to keep the wiper blades from freezing. MB should copy that right away.
