Latest examples of touchy-feely politically correct INSANITY

Red Is Dead

Teachers at an elementary school in England have been told to stop using red ink to mark up their students' papers because it has "negative connotations", reports the BBC.

In the future, kids at Uplands Manor Primary School in the West Midlands will have their mistakes noted in green ink. Penny Penn-Howard, head of school improvement for the district, said red "can be seen as a negative approach to improving pupils' work."

But Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said red ink is effective. "Children have to learn to take life's ups and downs," he said. "Banning red ink is a rather trendy and politically correct idea."

Snuffing Out Smokes

Recent prints of the famous 1969 photo of the Beatles crossing a street near the Abbey Road studios have been altered to remove the cigarette from Paul McCartney's hand, reports London's Sun.

Companies, among them U.S. giant Allposters, asked that the cigarette be removed by computer wizardry. It may also be removed for the cover of the Abbey Road album the next time it is re-issued.

Anti-smoking activists praised the move, but smokers' rights groups said it was absurd.

"This is pathetic," said Simon Clark of the pro-smoking group Forest. "What next? We will have to remove pipes and cigars from pictures of Sherlock Holmes and Winston Churchill. These people should stop trying to rewrite history."

How ridiculous will we let this stuff get?

Mike

This just adds to the already ridiculous mandates we have today!

Young kids get trophies for competitive sports just for showing up! There's a real esteem booster...only to be completely shattered when they enter schiolastic programs!

So, then green will have negative connotations too........

Worthless, the whole lot.

I had a (rather slow) second cousin that came home one day with a 5th place ribbon from a 100 yard dash..... When asked how many people were in the race he said "4".... This happend 20 years ago.... maybe that was the start of some of that 'awards for showing up'.....?

It sounds trivial at first, but these absurd examples serve to illustrate the ridiculous and out-of-touch priorities that years of rampant political correctness have brought us! People are no longer expected or encouraged to perform, to learn, to achieve, to compete, to excel, to even TRY to do anything other than sit around and convert oxygen into carbon-dioxide! Pretty soon we'll be awarding the Congressional Medal of Honor to Saddam Hussein, just so he doesn't get his damn feelings hurt! It's pathetic!

Once upon a time, life was much simpler. Like a box of cornflakes, without having to think its artificial colouring or preservatives ...

The progression of political correctiveness took its height in the early 1990s but somehow the movement has either taken a breather, or advanced into other areas such as those displayed here.

Interesting enough, VOLVO has taken on a team of women to re-design its cars (in and out). It boasts additional features and facelift, all with a woman's touch.

Its lines have gone softer, and pedals lighter.

Now, that is something to crow about.

Of course I'm joking about the medal of honor thing...but I stand by my point. Of course Yasser Arafat, of all people, won the Nobel Peace Prize a few years back, so anything is possible!

Seriously, I think it IS insanity for them to be worried about the color of the ink they correct papers with and whether or not it will hurt someone's feelings...OF COURSE red ink has a negative connotation! It's SUPPOSED to! If there's red ink all over your paper, that means you gave WRONG ANSWERS, and are in need of correction and additional help! Instead of spending that time and effort TEACHING the kids, so that they don't NEED corrections on thier papers, of ANY color, they worry about who they might offend with the color of thier pens! It's ridiculous! Schools and teachers have become so hyper-paranoid about offending or alienating or hurting the feelings of someone that they are becoming ineffective at what they are there for....to TEACH! They are not there to babysit the fragile feelings of under-achievers...they are supposed to be there to turn under-achievers into ACHIEVERS!

I think color coding is a great invention...it is very helpful for human beings trying to make out differences in things rapidly....

When I was in school they used red ink for the grade period. If you got a 100 percent it was a red 100 percent... no shame in that...and it was easy to find on the page... to distinguish it from what you had written on the page....

On aircraft gauges they use color coding and positioning of the gauges to help the pilot be more accurate in his crosscheck.. the area of oil pressure or whatever which is in the normal range will be green and in the up position when looking at the guage.. you can really find something out of kilter fast because it won't be lined up with the rest of the needles or in the right color zone.. of course audible warnings are even better when available....teamed with flashing lights...

I have seen greeting cards which played music when the page was opened up... maybe they could do that with the graded papers.... but then your classmate next to you would hear your grade... LOL

Did you send your child to a government school to be “edjekated” by government employees today? Did you know that in a recent survey of government school teachers, only 25% of them said that they were most concerned about their students getting the right answers on quizzes and tests? The rest were only concerned that the pupils would show some “creativity” in attempting to reach an answer! A creative wrong answer is still WRONG! Mark it so! In RED!

Leathermang has an excellent point! Are we going to remove the "redline" from our tachometers, because red has a "negative connotation", and might hurt some wimpy driver's feelings? Oh, yeah...let's change our brake lights to green also! We don't want to offend the driver behind us, right?

This reminds me of some studies done a while back...

They interviewed persons in the TV news business... they found first that the vast majority were liberal .... no secret there....

But to me the telling point was when they asked them why they had gotten into that field...

They answered " Because I want to change the world"....

NOT " I want to accurately convey the news"... LOL

If these anti redliners were really smart they would realize there is a good way around their "problem"... that is what is called 100percent testing... the child takes the test over until they get 100 percent of the questions correct...but you might as well change the class to pass fail (not a bad thing) because all the kids are going to know what they need to know coming out of each class... so an " A" becomes meaningless... unless you want to give them credit for being " creative"....LOL... had to throw that in there...

This idea is from my Applied Psychology course in 1975.... not a new idea... just not implemented because so many people are into "competition" I suspect...or those I have mentioned it to certainly were....

I am for the removal of cigarettes from any pictures which would cause people to think it is cool... keep in mind that TXBill still smokes...that might influence his attitude...he also seems to be a little cranky today... don't know why... will im him and ask...

I really did not see this thread as about that particular school but more about the general attitude of many in the (supposedly in ) education field who are more about feelings than facts..

I am all for creativity.. but when you get a person who makes it to " The View"... like that cute blond a while back.... who graduated from New York University with a degree in Journalism... and when asked on the air by a talk show host... " Who did the United States fight in WW2 ? and she cannot answer correctly... then someone needs to get hot about teachers who do not think SOME FACTS ARE NECESSARY TO MAKING DECISIONS LATER IN LIFE....

I think that 1. Journalism 2. Law Enforcement 3. Teachers all should have a degree in something else first... because those professions treat their students as FUTURE COLLEAGUES... Not as students needing serious guidance and critique to learn critical thinking skills...

Whew ! Sorry about that... just slipped out
