i wasn't making any claims either. i just stated my own conclusion and liston brought that secret with him to his grave. if you recall it took ali more than a dozen blows to knock out a tired out george foreman in zaire...

I don't think it hit Sonny. I don't think Ali thought he had hit Sonny so hard. Ali was standing and dancing over Sonny asking him to get up.

"I don't think it hit Sonny. I don't think Ali thought he had hit Sonny so hard. "
How can you put those two sentences together ? One saying you don't think it hit Liston, the other with the implicit assumption that he hit him but did not know how hard ? Now that is professional fence sitting if I ever saw it.... |

Don't pick on me like that!!
I mean, I don't think Ali hit Sonny hard enough to knock him out because I think Ali himself thought he didn't hit Sonny hard enough to knock him out because Ali was standing over Sonny shouting at him asking him to getup. Less clear now?

Kuan, you are SO young and sweet..... that is called TAUNTING.. and in football the refs throw the flag... ( asking -LOL)
Actually though , I like Ali so much that I consider it Showmanship when he did it... as was the LIP before the fights... |

You really think? I mean, if Ali thought he had hit Sonny hard enough he would have gone back to his corner no? OK maybe it was taunting. You're probably right.

there was a documentary on cable recently about that famous pose were it looked like he was taunting liston to get up. he didn't even hold that pose, it was a lucky shot, the photographer was in the right place at the right time. he walked over, swung his arm up to his shoulder then i think the ref motioned him away. it was a split second that was captured to live in people's mind's forever....

Why is Sonny on the list...
and not Floyd? Floyd beat him in the re-match.

Well, actually...
it Johanson that he beat in the rematch, but at age 21 I think he was the youngest champion.

I used to watch a lot of fights on TV. Sometimes a knock out punch doesn't look like much. this one hit liston on the jaw and apparently rocked his brain enough to do the deed.
I think it was taunting too. Ali was the first to exploit taunting to the degree that he did. Back in the day Ali and Namath were favorites for me. they talked big but backed it up. When Ali changed his name to muslim he was hounded by the media. There was a huge racial element in the hate because he was an "uppidy" black man. Cosell accepted Ali immediately and they fed off each other. They each, decades later said they made the other.
