C&D: Mercedes-Benz beats BMW!?!?

You heard it here first folks...

http://caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/comparisontests/2003/march/0303_comparo_notquites.xml?&page=8

latest comparo with luxury sedans. The W211 E320 beat every other contender. By only one point mind you, but you rarely see Benz's break the top three in any other their evaluations.

MB also had the shortest braking distance in the class (as I think all MB models do) - love those Mercedes brakes!

Regards,
- Ryan

Wow cool!

We better enjoy this while it last. Wait til the new 5 comes out, then its over. After all according to C&D the 1997 5series comes in second to the 2003 E by 1 point

Too bad "both the hood and the deck were inaccurately aligned in their openings..."

In a related story, smoldering copies of Car & Driver are making quite a mess at Chris Bangle's Munich office . . .

they still ragged on it pretty good, but they did make the right choice in picking it over the rest.

We looked at a W211 E500 in the showroom the other day. Coming in on $90K and the exterior panels were worse than the car C&D tested (by their description). Misalignment was an understatement.

OTOH, the interior was perfect. The interior shut lines were lined up with laser precision, and everything looked perfect, and then some.

The finish on the alloy wheels was simply superb. Wow. It seemed different than other MB alloys, and I don't know what the diff is, but it's great.

The engine bay was late model MB boring, and some "AMG" tuning in the appearance dept might be nice. The latest Kompressor AMG cars look SO hot when the hood comes up.

The cluster looks funny at first with the clock thing, but I would love it in the long run. Still needs a oil pressure gauge somewhere...

A W210 looks boxy in comparision, and the styling is "wow" where the BMW is "oh, okay."

If they imported an E320CDI or E270CDI, a W211 E-Class might be worth the financial leap and jump to the top of our shopping list.

BTW, the M45 is UGLY. Too bad. The new G35 Coupe is one the best looking cars on the road, period. Infiniti should drop the dogs and go with those new lookers...
