2003 Maxima SE 6-speed vs newer Mercedes Benz S500

Let me start by saying if you added a digit to my salary, there is NO WAY I would end up buying a Maxima over an S-Class...even the S430. But I'd prefer an AMG version...

I have alot of respect for this car, and as a right wing kinda guy, I have respect for the hard working, educated person driving it.

But here is the story

The S500 was driving kinda "mildy aggressive". It was black with tint, like my Maxima...two good looking cars, . anyway, he wasn't going nuts, but he was looking for the holes in the traffic, and accelerating quicker than most would in their $80,000 luxury sedan. He was looking for someone that wanted to play.

So when we got off on an exit, I was right behind him. He was first at the light, I was second. He took off, not REAL fast, but kinda fast, I stayed RIGHT with him. Finally he realized I wanted to play, and switched lanes and gunned it.

I stayed in my lane, and gunned it too.

We were doing about 20 when we gunned it, and I was either pulling on him or staying even with him up until he finally let off the gas...around 85mph...

at first I was about half a car length behind him, and I ended up with my front tires almost even with his rear tires.

I don't know if he was giving it 100%...

When we got to the next light, I was turning left, and he was turning right. I kinda held up a peace sign, verizon..whatever you want to call it...but he looked mad... I was happy that he even gave me the time of day...I dont' give modded Honda Civics the time of day, neither will I give a Neon SRT-4 an iota of attention...

so whoever you are, thanks.

damn, just looked up some info on it...
maybe he was giving it his all...

S500 Stats

0-60 in 6.1
1320 in 14.7

I mostly pulled on the guy...never did he pull on me...that's suprised me.

nice looking car ...bet it feels stable as HELL at 100+

Mercedes really shine at high speed versus 0-60 times.

once he hit 100, he probably would have been pulling on you. most mercedes hit 100 mph then they break out the long legs and keep going.

My 1992 300ce is a dog from a start, but once I get going at crusing speed ont he highway, I can mash the pedal and climb up in speed quickly from there.

don't forget auto box vs manual tranny, 5 speed versus 6 speed, differential ratios, and weight are all factors.

I'd like to see a race where you guys keep going until you have nothing left to give. Hell a riced out civic can probably keep up till about 85 90 mph before the s class gets its legs and really takes off from there.

Its also the driver that plays a big role. put 20 people in identical cars, and the better drivers will be faster, handle better, and get more form the car than the more inexperienced ones.

I'm sure the maxima is plenty fast, but would I want to drive one at 140 mph plus for extended periods of time on the sutobahn? hell no. I'd rather drive a car that was built for high speed cruising.

I would also rather have a Mercedes at 140 plus for a long period of time...they are heavier, more stable, better vehicles...

but there is a governor on the S500...120 something mph...

I have driven my 2003 Maxima up to 142mph before....felt fine...but I'm sure not as good as a Benz would have.

wellt hats good. My 1992 300ce should get up to 147.... But I doubt it will do much more than 130....

Give an s500 a limiter removal, it should hit 155 with some room to spare.

Damn the S500 is about as fast as the oldie but goodie W124 500E!

It weighs a lot more too. I've been driven around in both the S430 and S500. They ride really nice and the V-8s feel really torquey and have a lot of punch off the line.

However, I was MUCH more impressed when I got a ride in the old W140 S600! That thing was so smooth and so fast on the highway it wasn't even funny...

The interior also looks better in my opinion and it has all the right looks too. I've always loved the W140 despite people saying that it looks like a tank.

I do hate people who drive aggressively especially when they are in traffic and try to cut in and out as if everybody else wanted to wait...... no matter what they drive....

Honestly though, I meet less of these people on the roads driving a Benz when compared to other cars.

yeah, I was suprised that an S500 was getting "jiggy" with it...

I had to jump on that opportunity...won't happen very often...

I was so amazed that he/it gave me the time of day, that I posted this immediately on the maxima forum...

they wouldn't praise me for it...just tell me how big a peice of junk my car was in comparison...

I know my car is junk compared to an S500...but you guys are flaming me less (actually not at all) than my Maxima bretheren were...I like Mercedes owners, I may make a C-Class my next vehicle...maybe a C32 AMG? yeah, I wish...can't do that on my salary....

thanks all the Mercedes folk for not flaming me...I have a great respect for you guys, and this website.

ps..i'm sure without the limiter the S500 would keep pulling WAY behond where the Maxima stops pulling...

Seriously, I can't see any point that you would get flame for... especially from other Maxi owners.... There are ALWAYS faster cars, period.... hehe...

Anyways, back to topic.... S500 is amazingly fast, for its size and weight... and since you guys did a roll-start @ 20... I would say, either the guy wasn't putting the pedal down all the way, OR you are a god damn good driver...

Anyways, I am sure you will be happy on this board.... Mercedesshop is one of the most civilized automotive board you would find on the net, IMO....
