The Audis with decent tires are a blast in the snow! I TRY to get stuck (well, sort of), but the thing just keeps going.
Actually haven't ever had the Benz in snow yet. Kinda wondering how it does. It seems to have the limited slip diff in it. Should chug along pretty good.

Newer Subarus arent as good

When they had the boxer engine they were apparently insanely reliable. My father's friend bought a WRX...227 horse..well he gets about 20 MPG and the turbo has already been replaced. Admittedly, Subaru is the only Japanese car I'd want to own...maybe a Subara Brat for fun! I still think a 240D manual is a more reliable every day beater, but the Subaru is much faster, quieter, and more comfortable. I don't know about mileage, but the AWD apparently saps a bit of mileage. Around the 20's Ive heard.

I think the engines are still pretty much the same, but I was wondering how they were gonna hold up to a turbo.
Have you seen the new Outback they have with the pick-up type bed? Kind of like a 4 door Brat. Look kinda cool

Actually, Subaru's engines were and still are Boxster style engines. They are flat fours and flat sixes.

Porsche and Subaru are the only manufacturers that make these engines that are "flat" and have horizontally opposed cylinders.

This is exactly why they can make a large displacement 4-cylinder engine (2.5 liters) and still run smooth. They don't need counter-rotating balancing shafts to make it run smooth.

Boxster style engines are also not very tall and have a very low center of gravity. That is why Porsches and Subarus handle extremely well.

BTW, this engine in a Forester or Legacy has a ton of room in the engine compartment. You'll be surprised when you look at one at all the room.

I don't know about room. I looked under the hood of my brothers Outback, and said "Where's the engine?!" I suppose compared to alot of other front wheel drive cars it's roomy tho'.

The PPI looks great. Helen didn't give too many specifics over the phone, but compression and leakdown were new-spec, suspension looks good, no damage, and everything works well.

Looks like the things it needs:

Front brakes are at 40%, so might think about new ones in the near future. Rear's are 60%, so they'll last a while.

Summer tires are 4/32, so they're dumpster bound.

The 60,000 km service is due, and costs about $300 P/L.

Called my insurance company. Insurance is CHEAP compared to the Mercedes! $550 for a year, $500dd all-perils. We pay $700 a year for the C230 with $1000dd all-perils. ($2Million liability)

She's going to meet the owner after supper and talk $$. She is one TOUGH negotiator, so we'll see what happens.

We made $14,700 on the sale of the E300 (bought for $32,000 sold for $46,700 how often does THAT happen?) so I don't think she'll go much above that.

We'll see...

LOL!!

Glad it didn't! Do you have any idea of how much those dogs EAT? I grew up on Baffin Island, and we had huskies. They're not huge dogs (50-60lbs tops) but it seems like they eat their weight every day. We adopted an orphan wolf/malamute pup that grew into a 130lb monstrosity that nearly bankrupted us with the dog food bill.

It's really crowded here right now. Since the Subey has no plates, it's in the garage with the C230. The 190E is on the street and the 626 is in the driveway in "spot #3." I'll pick up plates this morning, and take 'er for a spin.

Yeah, kinda funny, eh?

Well, I like the thing. It's not the prettiest design, but the interior is huge and it drives reasonably well. The AWD system is seamless without any binding or other "4x4" foibles.

I took it to a snowy parking lot, and traction is super. It handles pretty well, with moderate understeer, but it's easy to add some power and it grabs hold. It's not "tossable" like a RWD car, but WAY better than FWD. The Blizzak/AWD combo is a snow-drag-race-away-from-a-light dream.

Braking is not up to MB spec. The pedal is firm, but overall modulation ability is not as good.

Steering is light and a bit numb on-center.

Took it for a freeway blast. Road noise is "wagon-like." It's not as bad as I thought, but definitely not in MB league. Tire noise was high, but Blizzaks are not quiet tires.

The interior materials are not MB quality, but pretty good nonetheless. Should be! This car cost about the same (new) as my C230. No squeaks or rattles yet. The doors close like old tin cans, but they did when new. Not unlike most other non-MB automobiles.

The 2000MY redesign brought a smoother exterior and better interior materials, but 2000 models carry a real price premium in the used market as they are "current" in their body style.

Overall, it's a pretty amazing buy. For 2/3 the price of new Civic LX, we got a high end AWD wagon with every option. Okay, it's three years old and has 62,000 kilometers on it, but...

Glad I didn't buy it new and take a 60% depreciation hit!

Depreciation isn't too big a deal if your gonna keep a car long term. And from what everyone says, these cars will last well enough to get your money's worth. My wifes stupid '96 Chrysler is only worth about $2800 trade-in already. We've about decided to just keep the stupid thing until it goes up in smoke, which hopefully will not happen for at least another 100k miles

BTW, I emailed my brother and told him we have a bunch of Mercedes nuts fawning over the Outback, and sent him the link to this thread. He thought it was pretty cool, and was greatful to get the Subaru forum link
