efficient Diesels?
I was going through the UK MB site and it seems that most if not all current Diesels have better performance numbers and get better mileage in automatic form. This includes the V-class van which in V220 CDI form does 0-62.5mph in 17.5sec with a stick and 14.9sec with a slushbox. Is this a UK thing or is shifting now a penalty?

Time marches on and so does technology, it ain't your daddy's torque converter anymore! For mpg, check out the VW diesel which I think may be one of the most fuel efficient passenger sedans in the US. As for performance, awhile back the auto trans versions of the tuner Corvettes and Porsches were actually putting down faster straight line numbers than the manuals, but there's no doubt that they'd be lost in the turns. Audi's continuously variable auto trans looks interesting.

Manual transmission VW TDI's are much more efficient than automatics, at least in the U.S. The Golf TDI automatic is rated at 34 mpg city, 45 hwy, while the manual is 42 city, 49 highway. Anecdotal experience from owners backs this up. You also lose a fair bit of power with the automatic (which you can easily recover with a chip, of course).
It'll be interesting to see the VAG CVT automatic matched to a TDI engine; hopefully we'll get this in a year or two.
