May 1977

What were you doing in May of 1977? I ask this because my dad graduated from high school in May of 1977. For his birthday I'd like to put together a package that reminds him of the music, fashion and events in the news from that year, any suggestions?

umm I was 2 years old and a few months, and had been in the U.S. for like a month.

So I guess I was moving into a house.

I graduated University in 1975 and I was in my second year of working on an FTC Coal study looking for collusion and price fixing. I had my 1975 OPEN Manta.

Just graduated from high school and enjoying the last summer living at home before heading to college. Spent most summer with a buddy of mine lying around the beach, aka beach bums.

K.C. and the Sunshine Band was big. So were kiana (quiana?) shirts. They were made of I think 100% polyester and was like wearing a dry cleaning bag. I used to dance for hours in those shirts. It's a wonder any of the girls would even come close to me
(Elvis died the next year)

Same here! HS grad that year. Elvis DID die that year, and Barry Manilow was popular. Disco was enjoying its heyday as were the Bee Gees.

I drove my 73 VW and enjoyed listening to 8-tracks on my Pioneer in-dash. Had the state-of-the-art Jensen Tri-axial speakers in the rear! Power amps then were power "boosters" and 40 watts was about the max that was available then. Nobody made subs, but folks would experiment. Knew a fellow classmate who put a 12-inch guitar speaker in his Honda Civic...won't tell you how it sounded!

Starlight Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight" was on the radio station rotations during that time (blechh!)

You can pretty much get cues watching "That 70's show". It's frighteningly accurate as to what was trendy during that era.!

No, I'm pretty sure Elvis died in 77, it'd be easy to check out on the net. I was at the end of my freshman year of HS. In June I started working at my dads gas station for the summer, my first real exposure to the business. I think it was my dad who really taught me the value of a customer and how to treat people. Of course he was also a little on the abrasive side (like someone else I know). But I still know how to treat a customer.
I think 77 in Madison, WI was the last year your could "cruise the square" (around the state capitol building). When I first started cruising, you could still drive on State St, which is kind of a buses-only shopping street now.
You should try finding out what he was "In to", maybe you can find his senior yearbook from HS, that might give a few clues.
One of my favorite albums of this era was "Boston", still a great recording in my mind, still sounds fresh.
I started "behind the wheel" for drivers ed that summer too!
I have a sister who graduated in 76, I could ask if she has any good ideas, but what is popular to one group of people or people from a certain area might not be that popular with other groups. You should find out what he was in to, what music he liked, what he did, etc. Any of his friends from high school that you know, that he still keeps in touch with? They would be the ones to ask.

May 1977 I began to build the engine on my 1976 Trans Am, and turn it into a 12 second street machine. In that same time was putting together a Custom 1971 Harley Sportster, still have both today, and still getting first a second place wins in shows with the Sportster..........The Good Days

Stairway to Heaven was a popular prom night song that year, even in Texas. Coors still hadn't made it south to Houston until that fall I think, so a highball run to Dallas was required.

I imagine That 70's Show is to me what Happy Days was to my folks! Wifey and I both laugh ourselves silly because they dio a pretty fair job of recreating that era, even funnier that Tommy Chong is playing a character on the show. Cheech and Chong, what an act, even for a country boy hehehe, Dave's not here maaaan.
