What a whiner!

http://foxnews.com/story/0,2933,80307,00.html

What part of SIGNING UP FOR THE MILITARY did this stupid, stupid, stupid man not understand?!?!

Anyone with any small amount of awareness of his surroundings would know that there is the very real potential for war/conflict/violence/death if one joins the military. This kid is pathetic. A disgrace. An embarassment to his family, and to the military. I can't believe they are letting him get away with this. He should be told, "You joined, you knew what you were doing, here you are, now shut up and do your job."

Mike

I have no problem in this day of volunteer soldiers with this guy not carrying a weapon. He can still be with an infantry squad walking point on missions. When he takes fire it will alert the rest of the squad as to which direction they need to return fire.

Exclamation What a moron...

this guy reminds me of the people who buy a house next to the an airport and then complain about the noise. What did they think those big, silvery tubes with wings were? Angeles. Please someone stop the world, I want to get off (can't stand the stupidity anymore!)

"They enlisted in peacetime to earn money for college, gain discipline and see the world."
"Not once did any of the recruiters I spoke with mention war, enemy, shooting or death."
Sounds almost like a candidate for the Darwin award

military life

I am a reserve army drill sergeant. I spend a great deal of my summers at lovely Ft. Sill, OK. I remember going to the first Gulf War as a medic. It wasn't a pleasent experience but we all did our jobs, and came home.
As a DI, we see young men coming in with no idea of what military life is all about. Many are all for education money, bonuses, and what can the army do for me benefits. A few show up for basic training and flip out when they realize what they have gotten themselves into. I think some recruiters paint a picture that is not entirely accurate. Don't get me wrong, these guys have extremely tough jobs to do complete with monthly quotas and a tough sell to today's generation of youth. I think that new recruits need to fully know what's required of them, and how tough the military is; it can be very rewarding, but at the same time tremendously stressful with long hours and hard working conditions.
I am not supporting this guy one bit. Most who join go on to do their hitch with no problems, many make the military a career. These few, however, call attention to a problem I see every year. When a private goes ballistic, we call the MPs, and the psychologist. The majority of the time the recruit has decided that the military is not for him, and wants to go home. Some, like this guy, are fine until action is required, then up and want to quit.
Maybe better screening is in order.

Maybe Clinton's stupid "don't ask, don't tell" policy got confused. The kid didn't ask if he would ever be in a combat situation, and the enlister didn't tell.

Pretty pathetic!

Angry WTF !!

As a veteran of the last Gulf "conflict" carp like this pisses me off to no extent.

I served my country proudly & w/ honor (RE-14 discharge code). When this jacka$$ decided that he wanted mommy & daddy to bail him out after touring Europe & spending all his money, he felt it was his only option.

What a joke !!

It's people like this kid that take our day to day freedoms for granted. They are also the ones that say "oh, we shouldn't torture this Sheik character, because it goes against what we as a country have been tought.....!"

Please you moron, if you don't want to help preserve the rights and basic freedoms which your father & his probably fought for. Go live in Canada w/ Bill Clinton and all the other draft dodgers. Either that or just go move to Zimbabwe & utilize your "photojournalist" skills that you were taught & paid for by our tax dollars.

Damn P*$$Y !!

If he DOES get killed or wounded in the line of duty, it will probably be from "friendly fire"...

If you get discharged as a conscientious objectors, do you still get all the tax perks and money? Also are you dishonorably discharged? Anybody know?

Geez. I kinda lump this in with sueing after you spill hot coffee on yourself.

Isn't there a famous quote (maybe from a movie?) along the lines of:
We can't make you kill. We'll just give you a weapon and training. When some guy on the other side tries to kill you, you'll have to make a decision. We're confident that you'll make the right decision.

This reminds me of a debate we had on campus in early Sept about whether or not to go to war. There was a gal there whose main reason for not going to war is that most of the military is in the military for education purposes. WTF? This angered me. When did the military become a huge scholarship? I wish someone had told me that, I would have joined up and wouldn't be taking all of these loans out! Turns out she is dating a guy in ROTC. Also, most of the members of ROTC on my campus are oppposed to the war. It was my understanding that as a soldier, you act without question on commands from your superior officer. But then again, I am just a fool that didn't realize the military is a scholarship fund and went the student loan route

"Go live in Canada w/ Bill Clinton and all the other draft dodgers. "

That statement reminds me....I have no problem , when someone becomes of age, of someone choosing to go live in some country which they agree with more than the US.... I would not hold that against anyone....

But I still do not think Jimmy Carter should have pardoned the draft dodgers that went elsewhere instead of serving. Did that not set a bad precedent for the next conflict ? Or for regard for laws in general ?

At that time any able bodied male was considered to have a 6 year obligation.....

discharges

There are several types of disharges:
Dishonorable
Honorable
Other Than Honorable Conditions
Medical (includes psychological)
General
There may be others I am not aware of.

"conscientious objector" was a status at one time which simply meant they were not required to carry a weapon.... many served as medics in combat.... and would have been granted Honorable Discharges as a result....

Also some pacifist served as fire fighters during WWII proudly and honorably. I think this kid is just a wimp who wanted a GI bill.
