New wheels!

Well, I've finally gone mad and traded my 2000 C240 for a 1999 SL500. Best decision I've ever made (there is a hostage to fortune if ever there was one). Smoke Silver over Java Napa leather with a panoramic glass hard top, a brown soft top, and an alloy wheel upgrade.

Here are some pictures. It still needs a thorough, obsessive detailing.

Very cool, you went for the smoke silver eh? How many people do you know trade in their car for an older model?

Nice ride! I dig the house too...Nice stonework. Looks like the one part is an addition? How old is the house?

Very nice!

How long did you have to wait to take a "sunny" picture?

Thanks Mikemover. If you approve, it must be OK.

You can see where we extended the house a couple of years ago. The stone is all old stone that was formerly on the side of the house; we removed that (tricky job) and put it on the new part of the front. We used an authentic lime mortar, but you can still see the join. That was in 1999. The house is relatively young, built in 1869 for the local estate's game keeper.

We'd always lived on big housing estates until we bought this house. It was a real struggle (financially) at the time. Now we have 11 acres of ground and our nearest neighbour is half a mile away; the road is 300 yards away. The privacy is a true luxury. We won't be moving in a hurry.

I envy your set-up as well. Beautiful home. That's my future plan as well - a stone house, plenty of land and the nearest neighbour miles away.

Fortunately, in Canada, this is not hard to do.

The new car rocks! Very nice. The wheels are great as well - very tasteful. I love the smoke silver color. It looks especially good on foggy days and at night...enjoy!

Beautiful car and nice wheels.

Which model were those wheels originally used on?

Very good decision, IMO, given my recent experience of a 2001 (Y-reg) E240. Nice engine. Not great manual. Nice exterior. Horrific, almost Japanese interior quality and build. Not impressed, needless to say.

So I think the older the design of MB, the better I would get a R129 SL any day.

I'll look out for the JJR plate in the fast lanes of our motorways - which do you most inhabit?

Suginami:

The wheels are from the factory, fitted as a no cost option. The standard wheel is a 17" five slot jobby with a polished rim. I've no idea why these wheels were available as a no cost option (most of the cars I've looked at were fitted with them). I think the only other model they came on was as a cost option on the E-Class Avantgarde.

Russ:

I live in Northumberland, but I stray far and wide in the UK, usually in Yorkshire. I was on the M6 today (100mph for 40 mins on cruise control, amazing in the UK). For some reason I have you down as living in Cambridgeshire/Essex/Suffolk, can't think why. I sometimes get down that way.

jjrodger,

Interestingly enough, my immigrant ancestor immigrated from Yorkshire in the middle 1600's. I'm told that my last name, "Smalley", originated in the Derbyshire area. I've done searches on the internet, and there are tons of Smalley's in that area still.

Next time you find yourself there, give my regards to all the Smalleys.

There was a boy at school called Smalley. It is certainly a Northern name. I like Yorkshire; it is predominantly rural and is picture-book English countryside; its main city these days is Leeds, not York, and it is there and in the surrounding towns (Barnsley, Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield, Wakefield &c) that I often have to work.

I'm in Bristol (I updated my profile now). Favourite motorway is definitely the M4. At the right time of day (well, night), you can find a trail of cars to tag along with for miles at 100 - 110 mph.
The lowish gearing and torquey nature of a 190E 2.0 makes it very good at this, somewhat surprisingly. There's plenty of motorway shove at 85-90 mph. Not as much as a 500SL though, I'm sure
