Political Litmus Test
"An American woman in Gaza to protest Israeli operations was killed Sunday when she was run over by an Israeli bulldozer, witnesses and hospital officials said.
Rachel Corrie, 23, a college student from Olympia, Wash., had been trying to stop the bulldozer from tearing down a building in the Rafah refugee camp, witnesses said. She was taken to Najar hospital in Rafah, where she died, said Dr. Ali Moussa, a hospital administrator." Interpretation 1: She was a martyr standing up for the rights of an oppressed and occupied people, and she was viciously killed standing up for those people and for her beliefs. Interpretation 2: Proving once again that Darwin was right... Interpretation 3: Well meaning but misguided, wrong place, wrong time What do you think? Just another grisly and tragic event that occurs around the world. I read the article today.. but its also important to point out this as well:
""Rachel was alone in front of the house as we were trying to get them to stop," Schnabel said. "She waved for the bulldozer to stop. She fell down and the bulldozer kept going. It had completely run over her and then it reversed and ran back over her." She was wearing a brightly colored jacket when the bulldozer hit her. Several Palestinians gathered at the site, and troops opened fire, killing one Palestinian, witnesses said. The army had no comment on that report. I'm a big believer in "Social Darwinism". Anyone stupid enough to stand in front of a bulldozer, in a violence-infested foreign country, trying to interfere with something that is none of her business, and beyond her control....How can you be surprised at the unfortunate result? I feel very sorry for her friends and family...But I have a hard time feeling sorry for her.

I think she may have been reading "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and took it to heart.
It was too bad that she had to sacrifice her life in that way. She would have been better to jump on top of a suicide bomber and actually save lives. |
