How slanted is your paper?

I get more and more pissed off every day that I read the Washington Post. My wife has been getting it for years, mostly for the style section, and even she is now ready to finally go to the Washington Times.

Today wasn't as bad as several others recently, but it is absolutely full of articles on the several friendly fire incidents and the relatively few Iraqi civilian deaths. Their full-page spread of war photos has two of disabled Abrams tanks with celebrating Iraqis, but none of Iraqis welcoming our troops or of the literally hundreds of destroyed Iraqi armor vehicles.

What's even more puzzling with the Post is that the editorial page has largely been for the war. I do think that this just goes to further illuminate the left-leaning ways of most of the press. They can't help but focus on the negative.

How's everyone else's local rag?

I refuse to read our local BS union news paper. We pick up a Sunday paper for coupons and sales and that's about it.

Yes we clip coupons, save a buck, make a buck

I get the L.A. Pravda Times

Even when the headline is "favorable" to the war effort, they always find a way to sneak in language that is anti-war and anti-Bush. They like ot carry pictures of Iraqis "suffering" at the hands of the Coalition. They never, however, publish pictures of Iraqis hurt by sadist saddam's henchmen.

When the campaign "bogged" down, they were tripping over themselves to show America's new "quagmire." Now that the war campaign is going well, they don't report on the victories by Coalition troops. And IF they do, they always manage to put a negative spin on it.

I think that the Iraqi Misinformation Minister will have a great career as an L.A.-Pravda Times editor.

I buy the L.A.-Pravda Times to line the bottom of the rabbit's cage.

Jeff, if you read the Post with skepticism, read the Washington Times with the same. It is extremely conservative and funded by Scaiffe among others.

I read the NY Times. Sure it's a little left of moderate, but I don't really read it for its war coverage. The photography is great though, and I think the reporting is fair and the pieces well written. I don't think they go out of their way to put a negative spin on the war.

DH, I actually treat everything I read with a bit of skepticism. I generally read the Washington Times as well most every day, and definitely find it to be more to my liking. I also like the NY Times.

I'm disappointed in the turn the NY Times has taken in the last year or two. Despite the traditional leftist cant of the editorial page (Pravda on the Hudson), the news departments took their position as "the newspaper of record" very seriously. Since Howell Raines took over, he's consciously politicized the news division, primarily in terms of story choice and continuing coverage - e.g. continuing to publicize the Martha Burk/Augusta National story when other reputable news outlets perceived it as politicized grandstanding. It's a shame - it used to be a great paper, and there's really nothing else in the metro area to read if you're literate.

Agreed about Raines. I don't read the editorials though, never really have. I skip over them and go to the Op-Ed contributors. I read the front section, metro, business, circuits, arts and leisure, automobiles, science, magazine, Westchester, and dining sections. You get a lot for a dollar (or $3 I think it is, on sunday).

Post An Interesting Thing . . .

As regards freedom of expression, and more specifically, freedom of the press, it's interesting to note that we are free to read, write, and publish any viewpoint we choose to express. In league with that, we have the right to rebuttal and debate if we choose to disagree with an opinion expressed by someone whether verbally, or in writing, or even via the electronic mediums. These forums are an excellent example of that freedom.

An old friend of mine was a radio news reporter. His catch phrase was, "If you don't like the news, go out and make some of your own". I would take that further and say that if we don't like what the media is feeding us, we need to hunt and forage for ourselves. There are so many newspapers and magazines that are available free online that it's staggering.

Get your news from as many sources as you feel you need to, and contribute to the informational process in any way you are capable of. Become a journalist if you have the ability to voice your opinions and tell a story. But remember that media is entertainment first, and facts second. No one wants just dry facts and statistics, they want to hear a good story. Write a letter to the editor, call in to a radio talk show, or try to control a segment of the media by producing news via the internet, public access TV, public radio, or in any other way you can, even if it's just by publishing a newsletter.

Where I live, we have one single local newspaper. It's owned by Gannet. Do I need to explain further?

One thing I liked about the Washington Post was that the daily paper cost a quarter, at least back in 1995 when I lived close enough to DC that it was a "local" paper.

I was able to read the whole paper on the hour-long Metro bus>train ride to work. Yes, I knew it was a liberal publication, but it is also an excellent newspaper. The articles are well-edited, and easy to read/skim. Good inverted pyramid style.

Now that our local paper (since moving to PA) is the Allentown Morning Call. It costs 50 cents. Not twice as good, not half as good, and similarly liberal. I only get a Sunday paper when my wife wants to clip coupons. Lately I've been getting my news from Fox News, and AM news stations WAEB and KYW while driving...

Washington Post is usless

I read it on the front page of the Post couple of months ago saying the economy is finally getting better, but when I opened the business section the headline said the economy is inching toward another recession. I would think the editor-in-chief must be sleeping on his job. How can such conflicting news printed on the same day paper? Go figure.

Don't have much time to write now but when I read a newspaper, it's the Washington Times. The Post is much too liberal for me. I do, however, like to get information from a variety of sources to try to form a well rounded opinion. I don't always have the luxery of time, though, so it's usually the Washington Times.

I do get the New York Times on my PDA everyday. It's good to at least keep abreast of what's going on, but I know they've got a liberal agenda.

Anyone remember the Washington Star? My parents used to get it way back when...
