partitioning HD in WinME

First thing, let's not clutter the thread with opinions of WinME. If you must say something about my choice of OS, email me directly and spare the innocent bystanders

I have a copy of the MB EPC disks that I'd like to... umm... evaluate on my PC. I don't have a bay for a second CD drive so I'm considering the option of making partitions for the contents of th CDs. Question is, I don't know how to make partitions in WinME. The last time I did anything like this was on an 8086 machine way back when.

What I'd really like is to be able to make the partitions without disrupting my current set-up or having to reinstall all the software and settings I have on the PC. Is there a native Windows utility for this (I don't think so)? Is there idiot-proof software that can help?

Thanks,
Sixto

www.powerquest.com

There is absolutly no substitute for PM. It will partition, format, manage file structure and do the dishes.

It won't work if you just create a directory and dump the contents of the CD in there?

P.S. Windows ME is an operating system that does not know its father.

According to others including Steve Brotherton, it only works if the PC thinks you have each CD in it's own drive.

Now the decision is $35 for Partition Magic or $30 for a USB external drive enclosure for on old IDE CD drive?

I was hoping there was a way to assign a drive letter to a directory but not one has coughed up that suggestion.

My father has changed a lot from the person who co-raised me. I hardly know him now. Am I SixtoME?

whew! could that site have any more "cookies"? I almost ran out of digital milk!

Anyone still running Win 9x ~ ME should have Partition Magic as a basic utility.

winME s#cks!

what i can't say that? oh ok...

have you tried the old dos command "subst"?

subst z: directory

example: subst z: c:\subcd

copy the cd to c:\subcd and the "z:" drive will then be the contents of that directory.

stick in your autoexec.bat to make it come up everytime.

Thanx

First of all your plan won't work. Even if it would, that's an awfully drastic step to take. All you need is some software that creates virtual CD-ROM drives. Try http://www.cdrom-emulator.com/.

That won't do it -- you can create virtual drives easily enough on your own without additional software. What is needed here are virtual CD-ROM drives.
