Quicksand

Does quicksand really exist? If so, have you ever seen it? I've heard talk about quicksand on some old movies and got to wondering.

YES IT DOES!!!

I've not visited those exotic areas that they glamorize in the movies, but I remember a beach in Italy that had a shallow inland pond that was deemed quicksand.

It is essentially a sandy surface with excessive moisture.

Needless to say, as children, my brother and I just HAD to ignore the posted warnings and test out the quicksand. Sure enough, both of us started sinking! You don't get swallowed up like in the movies, but I suppose you can if you just sit there! We let the quicksand engulf us to about our knees and then decided it was proof enough!

Anyway, we were close enough to the edge of the quicksand pond that we could pull ourselves out...with a degree of difficulty...after all, we had to overcome not just water, but wet (and heavy) sand.

It's a good thing parents don't know HALF the stuff boys do in their youth!

I forget exactly what parts of the world quicksand can be found in, but I learned that if you ever find yourself stuck in it... that you should "bicycle kick" and that should take your legs out. If you move too much of your upper body... you will sink deeper and deeper and you will suffocate/drown. Just a friendly "just incase" tip
