Big Moment

Okay, I think everyone has one sometime, and, given the nature of our MBs, they may tend to be of the "oh s%*t" sideways variety..

so, who has had a "big moment" in their car (MB or otherwise) and what happened?

My worst was on the way to work last January in the 80 240D. I was passing through a small town and heard a light clanging noise. All guages looked good, so I carried on figuring that something minor had come loose that would require tightening. Wrong. About 5 minutes later the alternator lights came on, and the temp guage shot up to the top peg instantly. I shut it down, and was immediately greeted by massive quantites of steam. Car was fatally wounded by the stupid harmonic balancer of all things shearing it's retaining pins. Once I do finally find a crankshaft for it, I'll rebuild it as I couldn't bring myself to strip it down to sell off the parts.

That week was just plain horrible. I was in the hospital two days later over an infection on my foot.

During the massive Ice Storm that affected Eastern Canada/Northeastern US a few years ago, I got rear-ended in my trusty 1971 Mercedes 250 sedan by a 5-ton Ontario Hydro truck. I was stopped at a stop sign and the Hydro truck slid into me. It knocked me like a hockey puck straight through the intersection on the icy roads. I ended up in a snow bank about 50 feet further.

Luckily, the oncoming cars avoided me and I was unharmed. To everyone's amazement my Benz only had a small dent in the trunk which I pounded out on the spot with the help of the Hydro crew. I didn't even file a claim.

The driver of the truck and the crew had been working over 15 hours straight during the storm to try and help get power to people in rural areas and the driver was simply exhausted and had slipped on the pedal.

The Hydro guys thanked me and drove away to help more people without power. I thanked the engineers at Mercedes (and the icy roads) and drove home with only a small scratch on the trunk to remind me of the incident.

Chris,

That's pretty admirable of you. A lot of people would have cashed in with a stupid lawsuit.

Thanks Stefano. Given the conditions, I didn't feel right about filing a claim. These guys all looked dead weary and they had a tough job to do. Besides, it was only a small scratch. The dent quite literally popped right back out with a few hammer taps. Gotta love our Mercedes...

Yup, all is well. The infection started out as athletes foot. This particular time however, the fungal infection refused to heal, and a bacterial infection set up along side the fungus.

They used some strong meds in the hospital and I was out in 6 days. The only thing that bothers me is that the regular OTC anti fungal medications seem to no longer be working very well. I've had another case of athletes foot since and even this one has been very slow to respond to medication. It took three different OTC meds to get it to heal this time.

I'm to the point now where I wear shoes only long enough to get to work, and kick 'em off as soon as I sit down. I haven't figured out what I'm going to do for outdoor activities.

Mine had to be when I lowsided my motorcycle after being cutoff in a curve where some gravel was present. I found myslef sliding into heavy oncoming traffic. Luckily, I stopped myself in the median. My bike wasn't so lucky...

I was driving along over a bridge in Buffalo once. It was cold but clear and I was driving cautiously in my POS Mazda pickup. All of a sudden I felt my rear end sliding sideways. Tried to steer, tried to brake, nothing worked. Just had to sit there while the truck turned sideways and then backwards. I coasted threw the intersection at the foot of the bridge while rotating around and around. Not sure if I did 2 or 3 360's but when the wheels finally gripped I was facing the right way and just continued right along as though nothing had happened. Fortunately it was late and few other cars were on the road.

Wow Bill, That must have really shaken you because you never mentioned it .... I know the intersection you are referring to... That would have ruined the whole day.... if there had been any cross traffic....
