Little riddle for the night...

...lets see, if anyone comes up with an idea:

Why was the W 140 300SE 2.8 (and the S280) nicknamed "Bürgermeister-Benz" in Germany?

Kind regards
Eberhard

Because it was an S-Class, appealing to the political ego, but it was the cheapest S-Class, appealing to the legendary German sense of fiscal restraint?

Because D-B gave municipal discounts to keep the local mayors from being seen in 728's or A8's?

Because it was SWB, for easy parking in front of the Rathaus?

Okay, I'm out of ideas.

Investigation ? This is not an open net test... this is supposed to be what you know already....
That was all I knew.... I thought I remember from about 4 years old seeing buildings where the local elected officials meet...and thought that was the name of them... so that is all I know.. but I knew it before you asked the question... did not go looking on the net....
House of Burger's ... so I guessed the meister might be the head of them... like mayor....

Bürgermeister is indeed the Mayor of a town or city.

When the W 140 was introduced, it was a pretty big car and earned a lot of criticism for that. Mercedes also was surprised, that sales to official customers was slow and BMW 728 were preferred (at that time the A8 was not at the map and the Audi V8 wasn't a real competition)

It took a while to figure out, why: A general budget rule did not allow the purchase of a car with a higher sticker price than DEM 80.000 and an engine bigger than 2.8 Liter.

So they dropped the 2.8 into the engine bay, lowered the entry price just under the magic line and sales picked up again.

The W 140 still had a hard time with these clientel, since the W 140 had the stigma of beeing oversized and the people on the street always thought it is a 500 SE anyway.

Kind regards
Eberhard

The "ü"? Well, it is right here on my keyboard. Just next to the "ö" and "ä".

Don't know the asci-code.

Kind regards
Eberhard

Ok, I'll send you a "medal" for not going on the net to further your knowledge :p

So let's recap : If you don't "already" know something, you won't open a book or go on the "net" to "investigate". Buy another warehouse

Just goofing around
