For those of you who have the economy gauge
How does every "control" their economy guage when driving? Do you look at it?....keep it in the red all the time?...or try not to have it in the redzone?
I try to keep mine on the border of the red and none red areas mostly because of gas mileage and engine wear due to load. If you drive with it in the red all the time would it be bad in anyway to the engine due to load and increased vacumm?

I use it to mentally justify going faster than the posted limit since it pegs the "good" side when I'm cruising home.

I think I've never once used it. Does it really make that much of a difference, or is it a marketing toy?

I've found mine to be quite usefull in judging when the car isn't running quite right since I have a feel of where is should be under certain driving conditions. It isn't anywhere near as good as a real vacuum guage as it has no scale and the range of travel has been somewhat truncated but it still can be useful.
When I'm able to, I try to stay to the left of the second 'o' in economy. If I can do this for an entire tank of gas it does make a noticable difference. jlc

I always thought it ironic for a luxury car to have an economy guage!

Out of all three of my MBs, only the SL has one!
In THAT car, that would be the gauge that I wouldn't care less to monitor!! :p

The 190 has one. It is great when trying to get the last few remaining miles out of tank when trying to get to the next gas station.

vacume gauge
A gasoline engine is essentially a large vacume pump. Mechanics use a hand-held vacume gauge to measure engine vitals. Vacume gauges can be used to diagnose leaking piston rings, valves, and even intake and exhaust leaks. On MB cars the gauge registors gas mileage because of more foot on the throttle increases intake air flow, vacume drops, so does mileage.
