MercedesShop SETI group...

Before anyone starts: yes, it has been established that I am a nerd.

Now then, SETI is the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence. They have a free program, SETI@Home, that runs either as a screensaver or all the time, depending on how you set it up.

I thought this might be a way to get our name out more, and put our idle computer time to a good cause.

Here is their website:

http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/

Your suggestions and comments are most welcome.

I also meant to say...

I also meant to say that we can amalgamate under MercedesShop.com as a group on SETI@Home. We would all add our combined contributions to the MercedesShop group total, and have a friendly competition with other groups. However, I must point out that we will not be the top dogs unless someone has 500 acres of Cray supercomputers running 24/7 for this project. There are people worldwide that have been doing this for years.

Please dont let this discourage you from helping out this good cause. Its free, and all you have to do is put your wasted CPU time to use. It doesnt hurt a bit .

I would have to pass. My internet connection is a shared one on a network spanning two houses, with my neighbour paying the lion share of the monthly bill. While I think the SETI program is interesting, I cannot in good conscience bog down our network with that program.

I understand your predicament, but...

It only accesses the internet for about 2 minutes, usually about once a day. Hell, you can set it up where it asks you for permission to get on the internet.

Have a good one.

the FAQ says it needs to use the internet 'abuot 5 minutes at a time' every few days.

The reason is that each download of data is very small (maybe 200-500 Kb) but requires great computing power to process, so one download will take a few days to be done with.

It's all fully automatic and works away unnoticed, you don't have to do anything. Oh and the screen saver version displays some really cool graphics of the signals on a 3D graph & what's being processed.

N.B. looking forward to some competition. I'll see if I can squeeze some more CPU out of the 2200+ athlon and be the fastest Mercedesshop extra-terrestrial finder

EDIT: Search the user groups for 'merc'. Mercedes-Benz USA has a group. They've got 13 members and done 52 years of CPU time. group founder: ML "500" Rotolo

EDIT AGAIN: And what's this?! Team Mercedes-Benz W124

I havent used SETI in a year. My computer kept crashing on a data module, and it needs reformatting anyway. It gets picky now that its been running on the same install of Win2kPro for 2.5 years now.

While I am also a nerd, and have developed a keen interest in planetary science and the possibility of extraterrestrial life, I must decline.

I do need something to take the place of my D&D group that became my Bar exam prep group, however, but I have two more weeks until then.

...uh, yes it would, especially given how few appear to know the proper spelling of ras[p]berry.
