If you speed you should look straight ahead where you're going(just as if you weren't speeding), not in your rearview mirror or at your speedometer.
I do a lot of late night early morning 5/6am bicycling. The roads I bike on are zoned 35mph and 40mph, its mainly farmland. Guys wanting to test their cars routinely do 80-90mph late at night because they assume no ones on the road.
I can't tell you how many times I'm doing 10 or 15mph on my bike on the soft shoulder and have a guy doing 80 or 90mph whizz by me THEN hit the brakes and look in his rearview. I wear light clothes and have three lights but the guys dont see me because they're paranoid about the cops. A couple of times I've stopped for a snack at the Wawa at the end of the road only to see the guys who blew passed me 10 minutes earlier. They always say, "sorry, man, didn't see ya"
I have nothing against speeders, infact I think speeders are generally safer drivers because they know their cars limits, but if you speed you should concentrate on the road and forget about the cops and radar and your speedo. If a guy is doing 50mph in a 35 he's ok, but double the limit the concentration seems to be in the rearview.
One guy who almost hit me apologized at the hoagie shop telling me he was taking a pic of his speedo to show friends and thats why he didn't see me lol
