"The moral of this story " is not to necessarily hire professionals... it is to get MORE into DIY.... like getting a good wench and lots of cable... and taking off the limbs on the side you don't want it to fall towards... to lighten it up...
Then, a good STihl Chainsaw... and careful cutting with someone operating the wench.... THen you have those toys for your next project... and you can aim higher with each succesive project...

-----------------------------------------------------

Life is just an excuse to collect tools....

Howdy leathermang,
Yeah!¡ a good "wench" will stand there and hold your beer and won't cuss you out toooo bad when you drop that tree on her car So to prevent that situaton I would use a good winch with good cable

" . . .like getting a good wench and lots of cable . . . "

So, he wasn't talking about "Sex in the City"?

Ok,OK, Typing a LITTLE too fast.... without speller engaged...

True Story:

I have about 4 acres of trees , mostly mesquite and oak on my place... and love to use my Stihl chainsaw... mostly to take out dead limbs or low limbs which hit me in the face when on the tractor... we keep our place pretty clean underneath due to a rather large aversion to snakes....

So I take my trusty chainsaw, a ladder , and one gallon can of premixed fuel down to this Oak. It is a metal can and I look at the tree and set it on the ground more than twice the distance from the tree that the limb I am going to cut is Long....

I also have a witness , I mean a helper, in case something goes wrong. Like I fall out of the tree . Seems reasonable .

So with a new sharp chain I cut this limb at the trunk of the tree at about 15 feet off the ground. The limb was about 15 inches across at the tree and about 10 feet long.......

Oak is a very strong wood..... even little twigs are hard to break... and it turned out that this limb was intertwined with the limb above it enough to hold its weight... for a while... more specifically long enough for a hearty swing..... so it did... and then let go... launching the limb clear out to my can of fuel and hitting it dead center... completely crushing it. I was laughing so hard I almost could not get down out of the tree....

Speaking of acts of god...

Many many years ago, a tree fell on my parent's car during a rain storm. Old Volvo 140 station wagon. Big oak.

Yeah. It dented the roof down a bit. Couple hundred in body work. When my dad went to pick up the Volvo in his Fiat (snicker) the body shop guys laguhed there assses off.

"If the tree had fallen on that thing, it would have smashed it in half." Or something to that effect.

Anyone see " sometimes a great notion" ? It stared Paul Newman and Henry Fonda.... about a family lumbering on their mountain...
That chainsaw and blade look like the one Paul Newman cut a guy's desk in half with... he was unhappy with the man.
