Talk me out of it ! (500 SEC)

I have found a great deal on a nice 1983 500SEC..... I would like your thoughts on the car ! Its a 1 owner grey market car with 129,000 well cared for miles. Always garage kept, however I haven't had the chance to check it out thoroughly or have it PPI'ed. Should I go for it ? On this car is there a lot of part differences as compared to the US spec. vehicle? what kind of fuel economy are we talking here?

Euro-spec 5.0 liter engined cars are great, in my opinion.

I do know that Euro-spec W107 500SL's are faster than the ubiquitous 560SL that we in the U.S. got. It may be the case that this 500SEC has more power than the run-of-the-mill 560SEC in the 1986-1991 cars.

Some dealers will give you trouble about working on the car, and you may have trouble ordering some parts (if you don't know what to ask for), but I believe all the parts are available, and if you DIY or use an indpenedent, I see no reason at all why this would not be a good car.

I suspect mileage would be in the 14 mpg to 16 mpg range, but don't quote me on that. It certainly couldn't be much better than that, or worse, for that matter.

I personally loooooove these W126 chassis coupes, and would love to see in my future a 1991 560SEC, white with cream interior....

With any gray market/private import car in a smog check area of California, besides the PPI, take it to a random gas station and have it smog checked, even if the owner already had it checked. If it doesn't show up on the system or if it's way out of whack, run away because that's what you'll wish you did when two years from now the smog check guy says you have to take it to a referee station.
