GMC had first mechanical problem...

Well some of you guys might remeber April 02 when we got a GMC Sierra 1500 4.6 2wd. We had a little discussion over the 4.6, 5.3, and 5.8 motors soI figured I would let you guys know how the first year went with the truck (tought of it because it broke down). The only mechanical problem so far was a driveability issue. Everytime you stopped it would die and needed gas to keep running. Turned out the a/c insulation had come off somewhere and was dripping water onto the distributor. This was fixed under warrenty with no trouble at all. Other than that the only other thing was my leaking window last summer which was also fixed under warrenty. After thoose to issues there is nothing GM can be blamed for because the tailgate being stolen dents and someone running into to it.
The gas consumption still kind of stinks but 18mpg is better than 15 so....
I just figured I would give you guys an update with 16k and one year down

not too bad but I think trucks is their strong point and the cars is the weak point. A freind of mine has just got a brand new sunfire and the whole trunk fills with water when it rains almost to make a bathtub!

I wouldn't be so nice to their "trucks" but then again I'm a Ford/Mopar guy...

Maybe someday GM'll start putting a solid front axle in their full-size trucks and will actually offer a cast-iron diesel...yeah, right.

Just wondering, Dan, why are you anti-Ford?

Not trying to start a Ford vs Chevy flame war; I'm just curious...

every Ford that my parents ever had was nothing but trouble and the fact I like the way the GM's look more (or did) It might also be that we always had GM trucks too.
Why are you a Ford guy?

Sorry guys, to me it seems like the big 3 truck makers (heck, I'll throw in Toyota into this crowd) are trying to out ugly-ify each other.

Why Chevy: Once you get over the god-awful avalanche front end, Chevy has better engines. Better mileage for sure, most models have more power.

I do like the Dodge I-6 Diesel though, but you've got to get over the big bulbous front end and grill.

JMHO

Fair enough

My truck, unfortunately, was an inheritance from one of my favorite people in the world. Before it, I had an '84 E-350 van (I sold that to get the 300D), also with the same 6.9l diesel. I had almost no problems with the van whatsoever; if I weren't so attached to the truck, I'd have kept the van. I don't pay attention to the gas trucks, but in all honesty, I'm more of an anti-GM guy than a straight Ford guy; if I were to buy a new truck, it'd actually be a Dodge. I love that Cummins B-series. The Ford IDI's ('83 to '94 6.9l and 7.3l pre-Powerstroke) are nice engines (a bit lacking in the power department, though), but the new Powerstrokes are too electronically-controlled for my tastes (to be fair, I have that same complaint about the new common-rail Cummins).

My two biggest beefs with GM are the independent front axles and the Duramax (the 6.5l doesn't even count, no offense RT). GM had an excellent opportunity to replace the 6.5l with a quality heavy duty diesel, and instead they "help" Isuzu built an aluminum-head (just because one hasn't failed yet doesn't mean that they won't) high-revving unit (high-revving diesels are okay in cars, but IMHO not in pickup trucks). Unfortunately, for the last 20 years or so (old GM's aren't bad), it's been all about cost-cutting, and GM's even admitted to this and plans to put more of an emphasis on quality, according to a news article that I read (and, actualy, posted on here a week or two ago).

It'll be interesting to see how GM turns out in the next 10 years or so...

My truck, 1976 GMC, 4WD, 5 speed, 350 vortex, Z71, super cab. I have put 168K on this baby and has been almost flawless. Changed the oil between 3 & 4K but always used synthetic. I am convinced I can put another 75K on her without any major problems. Proofs in the puddin.

My mom had a 99 Sierra 4x4, it was a POS (for a new vehicle). In under 60k miles it had many small problems, a good deal of the lights, including dash were burning out. Had a few driveline problems, windshield wipers, oil leaks, .... Now she has a 02 Silverado 4x4, it needed a new intermediate shaft and some other driveshaft work, and also leaked oil from the power steering gearbox, valve covers, and somewhere else (I forget). But the 02 has been much less problematic overall than the 99 was, then again the first year of any model is crap. IMHO the 5.3 is the perfect motor, not to big, not to small. The 99 got 18.5mpg with a 3.73 rear end.

Myself, I'm not crazy over any GM diesels or the ford PS, but I wouldn't mind getting a Dodge Cummins. Then again my other car is a Chrysler product too (and is modified), but the new stuff just looks to cheap IMHO. Anyway, any motor that you can modify to 3X the stock horsepower has a great motor, and I wouldn't mind having a truck that could put down some 13second times with minimal modifications, let alone a DIESEL truck that can do that and haul 14k# in stock form.

At first when someone told me that "all american cars suck" I was appalled by their ignorance, now I realize that most really do. I would also agree that the domestic trucks are a lot better than their cars.

I'm guessing that the "1976" number was a typo

Actually, my dad used to own a '76 GMC K-20 4x4 with a 350...the truck (particularly the engine) nickel-and-dimed him to death and got 5 mpg on a good day (going downhill with a tailwind), but when it was running, that truck would go anywhere...

1994 Chevy C1500 W/T

Rattled like a 20 year old vehicle at three years old.

Tailgate suddenly needs to be slammed HARD to close it.

Windshield wipers would randomly swipe the windshiled one time while driving down the road. Switch would be off.

Blew RHS headlight monthly.

Welds on right front of cab started to seperate, forcing RF fender and hood to droop and twist grille.

Truck was dumped off on a Dodge lot at 69k miles.

GM = Garbage Motors.
