Eminem's balcony scene-stealer
Rapper replays Jackson's baby-dangling stunt with doll at Glasgow hotel, writes DAMIEN HENDERSON
POP history repeated itself as farce yesterday when Eminem, the enfant terrible of rap, dangled a plastic baby over the edge of his hotel balcony in Glasgow, to the delight of the small crowd of fans who had waited all day to see him.

His gesture parodied the actions of Michael Jackson, who last year provoked international outrage by holding a real baby - purportedly his own - over a hotel balcony in Germany in front of horrified crowds below.

The rapper's latest stunt adds to a catalogue of incidents that have secured his status as one of the most controversial figures in pop music today, leading George W Bush to label him "the most dangerous threat to American children since polio".

Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, was visiting Scotland for only the second time to headline a sold-out performance at Hampden Park last night. More than 40,000 tickets for the show, which also features Cypress Hill, Xhibit, Obie Trice, and his occasional backing band, D12, sold out within 40 minutes when they went on sale.

Earlier in the day, Eminem played a game of cat and mouse with the crowd of about 30 fans and journalists who had waited since early morning for a glimpse of him at the Arthouse Hotel in Bath Street, but ended up crowding round a series of body-doubles standing in for him.

After arriving shortly after 6am in one of two tour buses, three people resembling Eminem were whisked into the front and back entrances of the hotel, where more than 50 rooms have reportedly been hired out by the tour entourage at a cost of over £6000.

Shortly after 3pm, a towel-covered figure emerged from the hotel, shielded by one of several huge bouncers who shooed press photographers away to escort him into a waiting people-carrier with tinted black windows.

Tensions flared when the car returned later and a scuffle ensued between one of the bouncers and a tabloid photographer. During the melee, the photographer grabbed the towel from the head of the man, revealing him to be an Eminem double.

"Will the real Slim Shady please stand up," someone from the crowd of teenage admirers quipped, quoting the rapper's own lyrics.

Dumisani Ncmanzi, 27, a Zimbabwean doctor working in England who was visiting Glasgow for the day, also showed signs of frustration. "This is like that song, Stan. We've been waiting in the cold for two hours now without a sign," he said, referring to the singer's ditty about an obsessive fan who commits suicide after failing to get an autograph from his idol.

"He's obviously too good for his fans," his wife Junior chimed, disheartened.

Green Lantern, the New York DJ who plays alongside Eminem, defended the subterfuge. "He gets this everywhere he goes," he said, gesturing to the smattering of photographers and youngsters still left on the street by late afternoon.

"This is nothing. This guy is like John Lennon and look what happened to him. I'm not saying that this is the same but you've got to learn from that s**t and take appropriate precautions."

The next appearance came at 5.20pm, when a group of bouncers took up positions opposite the hotel. A window opened and a lithe white man wearing a protective dust mask stepped on to the balcony.

"That's not him," screamed one outraged fan as he disappeared back inside. She was soon silenced, however, when he stepped back on to the balcony carrying a Mothercare doll and took off his face mask.

The crowd cheered, the doll was thrown upwards in a summersault, a fist was raised in salute and the 30-year-old Detroit rapper was back inside.

"Sars and Michael Jackson at the same time," Paulina Dandgey, a 19-year-old Glaswegian student, crooned approvingly.

Eileen Watson, 48, had travelled from Dunoon with her 19-year-old daughter to see the rapper. Both had tickets for last night's Hampden show.

She was unfazed by criticism of Eminem's depictions of violence against women or his casual espousal of gun culture. "He's just saying what he feels and what he's been through. I think he's brilliant," she said.

Grace, her daughter, was even more enthusiastic, heaping praise on him for appearing under a towel outside the hotel earlier. "He could have gone out the side door but he didn't," she said.

The last time Eminem played in Scotland, at Gig on the Green in 2001, 45 fans were taken to hospital requiring treatment and the show was abandoned at his request.

I don't recall the exact words, but Dennis Miller put a pretty good grasp on his philosophy.

Eminem isn't about freedom of speech as much as he is about the freedom to make money. The truth is he needs controversy to keep him famous in order to make up for his unfortunate dearth of talent.

With that being said, I don't really like him, nor do I really hate him, the beat to his songs are sometimes creative, but the wording....

His legendary envelope-pushing controversial stunts are only as popular as his fans and media ALLOW him to be!

Ignore his crap and he fades away...

So he parodied Michael Jackson's "baby dangling" incident... so that makes him an "a-hole" to hate? Sure he has controversy.. he even admits that he likes it. It helps his career.. it makes him different than all the other rappers.

Now this is not written directly towards RS... but if people can't stand him, just don't buy or listen to his songs. Howard Stern has the same idea... cause controversy which makes his career last longer. Ozzie has or had the same thing with peeing on the Alamo and biting a live bat's head off... although he said that he thought it was a rubber prop.

Eminem

Rap, Gangsta rap and Hip hop are the ultimite in teenage music: they are totaly dedicated to pissing off the old folks. Elvis could occasionally sort of carry a tune, and his songs were no dumber than the stupid drivel (How Much is that Doggie in the Window? The naughty Lady of Shady Lane) that were on Your Hit Parade before he came out with "You ain't Nothin but a Houn Dawg", although Elvis wasn't all that grammatical.

As for the baby-dangling, that is just a stunt, perhaps the most clever thing he has done recently.

I keep hearing that Rap and Hip hop are valid social criticism, but so far all I've heard is just rythmic *****ing with stupid rhymes.

Honestly do you guys have a soul? Imitating endangerment of any child by anyone is not funny. I also think Jackass went to far with some similar antics. I personally believe that joking about endangerment of children should be taken very seriously, due to the fact that it only leads to stupid imitations and it is just wrong. Do you think it's ok to imitate sex with a child doll? Don't respond I am sure you think its ok.

Doll dangling

I did not mean to say that it was a stroke of genius to dangle the doll. There are probably serious lame-os among his fand that might seek to imitate his doll dangling with a real baby, perhaps under the influence. I hope not.

It may be the most clever thing he has done lately. He doesn't do that many clever things. Hey, he's a rapper. Rapper suppose to act stoopid, man.

It is an ironic statement to imitate something stupid that Michael Jackson has done, and was probably done with planning aforethought. It seems to me that Eminem actually plans his moves, whereas the usual rapper thing is to do dumb ***** on impulse. This is because Eminem is acting: trying to be a street-smart ghetto kid, which he is not. Note the name M&M, named after a popular candy, rather than some dopey name like fifty cent or LL Cool J. He shows he knows he is an inexpensive consumer product rather than some posturing fool who thinks he is actually saying anything to be taken seriously by anyone who matters.

The TRULY ironic thing would have been to dangle a plush M&M stuffed candy action figure. I can't decide whether Red or Green would be the better statement. Hmmm.

Un-real slim shady - Eminem’s '£275,000 gift' really worth £50

Eminem fan Sian Fox cried with emotion after the rap star handed her a ‘£275,000 diamond’ necklace – even though she knew it was a fake.

Prudential worker Sian says she doesn’t care the “tacky” chain is worth just £50 and could stain her clothes if she wears it – because she will treasure it and the memory forever.

The rapper plucked the 19-year-old from the 65,000 crowd at his Anger Management show in Milton Keynes on Monday and handed over the necklace.

Sian then had to pass the gift to security to pick up backstage, and was made to don a disguise so she wouldn’t be mugged.

The stunt aimed to prove the singer, known as the real Slim Shady, wasn’t obsessed with money after the tabloids claimed he blew £500,000 on jewellery in just seven days.

He told the crowd: “I would never spend that much on jewellery.”

Lifting the chain and pendant above his head, he added: “I’m not fronting, but this cost me $450,000.”

He then gave it to Sian, who later had the nickel pendant valued at a mere £50.

Sian, who lives off Colemans Moor Road, Woodley, said: “It was pretty obvious it was fake.

“I’m not disappointed, if anything I’m relieved it’s not worth that amount. My house would have been broken into and it would have been too much responsibility. I wouldn’t want to sell it, so I couldn’t care less if it was worth 50p.

“Some people might think it’s tacky, but I like it anyway. I’m not going to wear it out, I’m keeping it somewhere safe.”

Sian and sister Kelly, 16, had battled their way to the front when the megastar came on and performed a few songs before stopping to talk to the crowd.

“He said he was going to give it to the most beautiful girl there,” she said. “Then he gave it to me – and I was looking minging!

“He went from side to side then I saw he was going to pass it to me. I freaked out – I was crying for about half an hour. The feeling was so overwhelming – he’s one of the biggest stars in the world.”

But when Sian took the prized possession to work
colleagues refused to believe her. “It took a lot for them to believe me, but then everyone wanted to try it on so they could say they’d worn Eminem’s necklace.”

Eminem was conned

£ 50 is a fair amount of money. If it can only buy costume jewelery that will stain one's clothes, then they need to buy their costume jewelery from a different manufacturer.

Wearing incredibly expensive jewelery that is indistinguishible from well-made fakes is pretty stupid.

Well it was appraised as £ 50, not that he actually spent that much. Apparently the appraiser must think highly of costume jewelry.
