Thumbs up July 1 is Canada Day! Canadians, care to explain?

Saw that on my calendar when I changed the month this morning...

...anyone know what the significance of this day is?

Eh? Take off, hosers!

Canada Day used to be known as Dominion Day, First of July, Confederation Day and July the First.

Canada wasn't born on July 1st, but the holiday celebrates the events that took place on this day.

On July 1, 1867, the British North America Act created the Canadian federal government. This Act stated "one Dominion under the name of Canada," which is why Canada Day was originally called Dominion Day.

In 1982, Dominion Day was changed to Canada Day after a vote from Parliament. Not everyone was happy about this change. Some people felt that a 115 year-old part of Canadian heritage was lost. The new name stuck and every July 1st, Canadians celebrate Canada Day. If the first is on a Sunday, it's observed on the following day.

Besides, it happens before the big celebration of those Gretzky stealing, Northern Mexicans!

No, no, no, no...

May 5th is the day the Puebla indians (or was it the Oaxacans, can't recall right now) defeated the French Army during their occupation of Mexico after Mexico defaulted on loans.

The Mexican Independence day is September 16th.

We do a lot of the same stuff as you Yanks. Drink too much beer and get too much sun, watch fireworks, and just celebrate living in the best nation on the planet. Sound familiar?

does quebec celebrate?

but seriously, i spent one CD there working, and it was strange to do that and miss 7/4 at home.

was also there on 911, and THAT was very strange being out of country. but, i MUST say that i think the canucks felt 911 every bit as hard as we did. many of the large buildings flew US flags at half mast for a while. i had a feeling that we might not have been as sympathic to their plight had those planes hit toronto instead.

have a happy CD, and FILL YER BOOTS!

Most folks in Quebec love Canada, and they have voted to stay in confederation.

We did mourn 9-11, not just for the Canadians killed in the WTC buildings, but for our neighbours and their families. This is why we joined you in Afganistan without hesitation. Though I fell back and forth from one side of the fence to the other concerning Iraq, the Canadian gov't should have honoured it's committment to the US and provided much greater support. We can't send much for troops thanks to other committments, but moral support would have been nice.

HAPPY CANADA DAY

July first is indeed the celebration of the Dominion of Canada.

We started off with only 4 provinces;

Ontario
Quebec
New Brunswick
Nova Scotia

Capital City: Ottawa

BTW, Congrats to our Northern Neighbors for snagging the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Maybe they'll finally fix that sorry excuse for a road to Whistler!

Though late, here is a fine example of why we celebrate Canada Day...
