I thought I'd seen it all...
Then today I saw a late model Caddy with hubcaps that kept spinning when the car came to a stop. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. Is that part of the bling bling trend?

Were they the wheels or were they jubcaps sixto? If they were the wheels then you saw some of the most expensive wheels out there. $1000+ each if I remember correctly.

I saw those a few weeks ago as wheel at a tool & parts show. They have an outer hubcap that just freewhells, so when the car stops, the outer cover just keeps on spinning.

Saw one like that recently on a Caddy SUV. It looks kinda cool when the vehicle is stopped while it's outter hub is still spinning. Gives the impression of Micheal Jackson's moon walk on wheels
I won't want them on my car though.

I couldn't tell if they were hubcaps or wheels. I don't think Caddies these days come will steel wheels so I figure they have to be some sort of alloy wheel.
Others have told me that they create a different effect when the car is moving because they turn more slowly than the bolted part of the wheels. Kind of like watching TV through the blades of an electric fan, I guess. It's amazing what's worth money to some people but I'm sure my neighbor with a Prius thinks the same thing of me Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

They are known on the street as "Spinners" - a couple weeks ago, someone in LA was SHOT when someone wanted to jack his set of spinners! WTF?
Personally, I find them to be rather juvinile for my tastes. But to each his/her own. |

If one were to install them on their Benz, I would wish that they would have the car confiscated immediately and given to someone that understands Mercedes-Benz.
Thank goodness RAP has moved on from German cars to giant bloated SUV's that still don't match the artist's inflated egos. Don't get me wrong, I like some rap, and rock-rap, too, but most of it is just garbage done by no-talent thugs looking for a quick score. Most get ripped of by greedy hanger-ons. The music is often just sampling, the words lack originality (how many times can we hear about your ride and your "bit#hes?) and the artists themselves rarely have anything to do with the final product. Yes, the same is true of boy-bands, girl-bands, and their ilk. Whatever happened to musicians, singers and song-writers? Well, they're out there, but we just have to work harder to find them.

If it's any consolation, the artists in this case make a pittance considering the gross receipts from album sales.

They're usually on sale at the local Kragen for $59, along with the "plus size" wheelcovers that make 14" wheels look like a 16" or a 15" look like a 17".

the ones you are referring to are called "Spreewells", after the famous basketball player that invented them.

gripe mode activated:
When I was in my "formative years", circa 1984, one would actually have to have some kind of talent to become popular in music. Even Tom Petty can come up with some catchy tunes. But now, the rap crowd has destroyed music. Do you need to be able to play an instrument well or sing with some talent or write an interesting song? No, all you need is a casio beat machine and some dumba$$ with an attitude. Think if you will of someone WHO IS ACTUALLY HAPPY WITH LIFE singing rap music. Looks silly doesn't it. So why do we pay any attention just because someone is laying the "I've been mistreated" sympathy spheal on us? This has got to get old eventually. Now this same crowd has destroyed fashion, tennis shoes, car accessories, aftermarket stereo's, ect. Sorry if I have offended anyone, but JMHO. Spinners: I've seen a couple around here. One was on an SUV and I also saw a sport compact. I think they are interesting, it is certainly something you don't expect to see. Still, my feeling about wheels is that they must be engineered to be strong, light, durable and not trendy. That's why I like the forged bunt cakes so much: really strong and forged. I think that if you leave metal on a wheel just for style that does not add to the strength of the wheel, you are not making it better. Sholin

Example of happy man rapping: Will Smith. Does it look silly? Usually.
I personally have always wanted to see the rap stars try the very same thing in say, an Iron Maiden or 'that red haired british guy who OD'ed on every drug known to man and died' style. He was some sort of punk rocker in the early 80's. Also, the songs in that style must convey a message, besides the fact that they have more money than brains or can buy strippers for their videos and rap about how many ho's they have. Also, they couldnt mention their vehicles unless it was a 1978 beat-to-$h|t Volvo 240dl or similar. None of this Escalade on dubs crap. No guns or gang-banging stuff. If they can sell records like that, then they should not be ridiculed anymore and let to continue on their way. And above all else, the above would be damned entertaining because no one would hack it. They would all fail, miserably. And I would laugh.

IMO, rap itself is not necessarily annoying but the message in many rap songs is disturbing. Blondie's Rapture didn't make sense but it was entertaining. The Sugar Hill Gang's Rapper's Delight was another fun song. I spent hours with my ear to the radio tyring to learn the lyrics. MC Hammer was entertaining until all his songs started soundig the same. Even Will Smith's songs are worth listening to. He has a song about summer that came out maybe 10 years ago and the last thing it is is annoying. Then gangs became the core theme and it went downhill as far as a form of entertainment. There probably is a legitimate message, but who's going to listen?
Is this related to spinners? I can't imagine someone in a car with spinners litstening to anything but rap. Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

I don't know how to say it any better than blackmercedes did, so I guess I won't.
Nah no real message. Actually I used to listen to eminem's first CD (before I got sick of his 'music'), there was a 1 min skit about they couldn't market Eminem's music because it was focused on homosexuals and drugs where as Dre's music was successful because of rapping about "big screens, blunts, 40s, and *****es." Then again Eminem is a whole different character.... That spinner would be interesting, but I'm not seeing that happening to any of my cars....
