1983 280SEL Euro AMG???
 

Anyone know what a 83 280SEL Euro AMG looks like? Is this a desirable model? Fast?

a 280SEL is probably the lowest model in the w126 family. I highly doubt its a real AMG.. it might just have a AMG wheel, or a body kit.. but thats about it. The 280 has a 6-cylinder engine and I don't think they were that fast... atleast not as fast as the 500/560 series.

Wasn't there a 230SEL 4.5 that was a Euro version? I couldn't find anything on a search except an engine rebuild price. If it was a 4.5 it would be an 8 I believe.

My old girlfriends dad has one of these.. Its def. Euro...4.5 Im not sure of though !

The 280SE 4.5, 280SEL 4.5, 300SEL 3.5 and 300SEL 4.5 were offered in the US... back in the early 70s before AMG had anything of a name. There are the W108 and W109 series.

I agree that it's most likely a 280SEL with AMG styling additions.

Help me out here. I am a new owner of a 1985 euro 280 sl with the 110 engine. It is a twin cam 6 cylander of 2775(approx) cc's that runs really well. I think it is even a few more hp then the 4.5 v8. 1st question How often has MB named a model for an example 280 SEL but then put a 4.5 liter engine in?2. Why do they do it?
My old 240 D had a 2400 diesel. My 420 sel has a 4.2 engine. That makes sense. The other doesn't.

The M 110 sixcylinder in fact has more power than the US-spec 4.5 eight.

185 hp compared to about 160 hp.

The dualcam six was in fact one of the sportiest engines Mercedes ever build. The detuned the engine to get it in a safe distance to the old 380 SE.

It started with the 600 grosser. It actually had ta 6.3l M100. I guess 630 wasn't as imposing as 630. The same engine went into the 300SEL and it was called the 300SEL 6.3. I listed the designations for the other V8 options in that body style. It calmed down after that except for the US spec W114 250 that actually had a 2.8l M130(?) engine. The US spec W114 280 had the M110. There was also the 450SEL 6.9 that replaced the 300SEL 6.3.

Things heated up again with the US spec 190E 2.3 and the nonUS spec 190 that I think had a 1.8l M102.

The early W140s were also mislabeled. The 300SE and 400SE/L actually had 3.2l M104 and 4.2l M119 engines respectively. Even the 600s these days have a 5.5l V12 or something less than 6l by more than change.

Why? Don't know.

The US spec 4.5 has 180 or 185 hp and more torque than any M110. The US spec 3.8 was rated at 160hp.

Someone I know rebuilt an M110 to the highest factory spec (pistons, cams, etc.) and his 280GE 0-60mph (~0-100km/h) time dropped from 18sec to 13sec. The M110 is very capable.

What is a "GE" or is that A Typo for SE?

Seeing this thing hustle to 60mph in 13sec must be something to see.

Shure. But remember. The 4.5 has was rated with SAE-hp, the M110 with DIN.

The 280 GE is the Geländewagen with the fuel injected M 110.

Citing Nitske, a Euro spec 450SL does 0-100km/h in 8.5sec, a 107 280SL in 9.5sec, a US spec 450SL in 11sec.

You're right, the 1980 US spec 4.5 was rated at 160hp SAE.
