Mercedes Maintenance

First time Mercedes owner, a 2001 ML55 AMG. Am concerned about waiting for Mercedes computer to tell me when maintenance required. Am accustomed to 3K oil change, filters, grease, etc my whole life. Should I be concerned in any way with Mercedes maintenance schedule or can I have maintenance done my way...is their and upside or even downside to doing this??

Yes. The consenus is that the FSS is to be ignored with respect to oil and filter changes. Even using synthetic oil, the life span seem limited to 5000-6000 miles between lubrication services.

Most just do a few extra changes, and don't reset the FSS each time, instead doing the A and B services as required, just with additional oil changes along the way.

Thanks for reply; have always done 3K to 6K oil changes on american owned autos. The Corvette owned used same synthenic oil brand recommended by Mercedes and recommended 6k oil changes. Will commence somewhere between 5K and 6K oil changes; that way 10K scheduled oil change would fall within FSS schedule.

Can't understand the point of over maintaining a car that has a reputation of requireing little or no maintenace. I have never done any work (except 5000 mile oil filter changes on my 97 MB With over 180,000 miles the car runs flawlessly. Why pay a lot for a car that is always in need of service? Of course I'm carefull enough never to take my auto into a dealer as everyone knows they cause more problems than you would expect.
