my ex wifes volvo.....

an '88 740GLE is leaking oil. It seems to be coming from the oil filler cap. I started the engine and reeved it for about a minute and oil seeped out of the cap. Returned the engine to idle and removed the cap which was under a LOT of pressure. Oil also appears to be seeping out of the camshaft seals.

Is this amount pressure normal? If not, what could be causing it?

thanks, thebern

Egnine compression is leaking into the valve cover area. Time for a leakdown test. It could be bad valve guides.

Flame trap

was the culprit. The flame trape is volvo's idea of a PVC valve. Very inexpensive and easyto replace. Oh by the way I joined a volvo site identical to this one in format.

thanks, thebern

Here is a link to an explanation. The solution is to clean or replace the flame trap. The excess pressure can bvlow out the seals.

http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineSealsBeltsVent.htm#Crankcase_Ventilation_%20A_Treatise

BTW, the 700/900 FAQ is a valuable Volvo resource. I've used it many times.

Maybe a similar FAQ can be done for this site.

Pressure in the crankcase could be caused by compression leaking by the pistons/rings or a blown headgasket. Is it overheating? Did it overheat badly?

Thanks Warren

It was definatly the flame trap. Very cheap and easy to replace- once located. The link you provided was GREAT. I went to and joined 'club volvo' which is identical in format to this site and had similiar input.

Only time, a few weeks, will tell if there was any 'extensive 'damage done to the seals

i don't think the car overheated but then again it is my ex's and who knows what has happened to the car in the last few years.

thanks a bunch, I got eggplant parmagsan for dinner and dessert (you know) as payment for my time and expertise(?)

Well Mr. thebern, overheating is really not a problem on a B230F, the 4 cyl in your ex-wife's car. These cast iron block, aluminum head engines are very rugged and reliable.

It's best to replace the front seals every 100K miles, or every other timing belt change. The rear seal is a different story. You problebly caught it in time or you would have oil all over the place.

It's a good idea to replace the rubber ring under to oil cap. They are cheap too and common to all Volvos, including the FWD models.

Check the other parts of the FAQ or print it all out double sided on your comany's laser printer. It's well worth it. I have quite a few entries in there.
