Scooters

Alright,

With the school year about to start back up, I am looking around for a cheap used scooter. Anyone here have any good resources? Any opinions? I just want something cheap, reliable and effiecient to get me from my apt to campus. I found a used Honda Spree real cheap. I just hope no one questions my sexuality.

i paid $200 for a spree with a gummed-up carb.

it even has: drum-roll..... a beer holder :D

and a basket for fetching even more beer!

I've got a '92 Yamaha Jog scooter (50 cc) with 1500 miles. Picked it up for $300 not running. The fuel system just needed to be cleaned up.

Picked up my 1978 Puch moped a couple of years ago for $250. It had 72 miles on it.
The coolest scooters are the BMW's with plexiglas top, windshield wiper and believe it or not--seatbelts! I wish they imported them into this country. I haven't been able to figure out what the large levers in between your legs are for on those scooters. Anyone know?

What do you all use your scooters for?

I use mine for general errands, commuting to school when I can, taking my daughter to school etc. I can also carry it on my motorhome bumper (although I never have). I think scooters and mopeds are great city vehicles. I;ve seen six new scooters in my neighborhood the past couple of weeks.

In France you can ride them at 14 so all the teenagers have them. Lots of mopeds designed to look like crotch rockets.

Benelli makes scooters with a roof too: http://www.adivabenelli.com/

Well, I ended up getting it. It is a fun little beast. BUT, I made the mistake of letting my friend ride it and he tried to pop a wheelie and ended up wrecking it, less than 12 hours after I got it. I am f***ing pissed right now. He vowes he will fix it, but as of right now, I think I am going to demand he pays me what I paid for it, and he gets a scooter with f***ed up plastic, a bent front fork, and a bent front wheel...

Lesson previously learned: NEVER let a friend drive your motorcycle. Ever.

engatwork 08-17-2003 09:50 AM

I agree with Gilly based on past experiences.

Gilly 08-17-2003 09:58 AM

Thanks. Well, if you have a friend who has AS much or more experience than you riding cycle, and you believe they have the best intentions, I'd go along with it. But even then.....for example a good friend of mine with MUCH more experience than i riding, wanted to ride my K75S. OK, fine, his multithousand dollar cycle was parked next to mine, y'know I'm thinking "go ahead, drop it, I'll take YOURS hee hee". So, it was OK, came back with it, complaining about how it hit the rev limiter on every shift!!!! "Uh really Dave, I think I've only hit the rev limiter once or twice since I've owned it, and that was in 5th gear:confused:      "

I have a Yamaha Zuma (bought new) 50cc engine. You can buy parts for this scoot that will allow it to go 70mph. Otherwise its a real bargain, stock. One to 3 years old and you can get one for about $600. There're great fun.
