The honored manufacturer for this year was Ford .... and thus the largest assembly of GT40's in history

The People's Choice Award went to a Ford GT40 that placed 3rd in the 1-2-3 place sweep of the 1966 Lemans Race. The owner said he races the car!!! I'd have that darn thing in my living room if I owned it!!

The GT40's are really remarkable cars. These where designed in the mid-60's. Developed to beat Ferrari. When you look at them closely, they were very advanced for their day.
The mid-engine, monocoque body, raw V-8 power, transaxel were the setup for many future race cars. If one looks at most race cars of that era, they were still tube frame. I now enjoy telling my kids about (and as of the weekend before last) showing them how remarkable these cars really were. The "40" of the GT$) meaning 40" tall. The gullwing doors, the specific bubble door to accomodate Dan Gurney's tall frame, the full opening front and rear bay covers to allow quick access to all engine and suspension areas. It was my son who pointed out how low the frontal area is on these cars. Almost like two coverings for the front tires and something draped across the front. A design trend for race cars that took years to be adopted. Haasman
