Any writer that has to begin an argument with comparisons to nazis needs to go back to journalism school.

Yes, it's a good argument. Giving police more power, or more reasons for "checking us out" is an ugly facet of this click-it law. But this law was passed because too many morons were putting themselves in harm's way, going against good reason for buckling up, then sucking up the insurance money (that we all pay) for the higher medical bills when they get into an accident. If I didn't have to share my insurance with these morons, it'd be a no-brainer and I'd say let these drivers do what they want and the click-it laws are dumb. Otherwise I have no opinion, but therein lies the tradeoff of this law.

I think you guys are missing the point. I don't argue that seat belts are not a good thing. The point is we are slowly loosing our rights to make decisions for our own well being. Suppose I'm talking a walk one evening and the outside temp is 45* and a cop car stops and the officer gets out and tells me he is going to have to write me a citation, because I'm not wearing a jacket. The law says that every citizen is required to wear a jacket when they are outside and the temp is below 60* By not wearing a jacket I could develop pneumonia and be a burden to the health care system. By the way, I don't have any numbers, but I'll bet more of our insurance $$ go to insurance fraud than non seat belt wearers. Thanks for the input though. That's why I posted the question

Seat belts are bad for society, especially in the nations with universal access to health care.
Seat belts have contributed greatly to reducing fatalities in auto collisions. However, many of those people that might have died do require expensive medical care, instead of a cheap wagon ride to the morgue. If we are looking at things on a purely fiscal basis, we should return auto saftey standards to the 1950's immediately. However, that's not the type of society we seem to want. I have often been torn on seat-belt laws. While I think that belts should be mandatory for all children, I'm not sure about adults. Darwin's theories in action...
