I was in a hurricane at sea one time and the dang water sure was more up-and-down than that!

Nice photo though. I'll bet its an ore frieghter on Superior. Any other guesses?

I agree the ship looks like a great lakes ship. My daughter sent the pic to me with an Isabel caption.

I don't want to steal anyone's thunder, but I think that picture is doctored.

In all the time I've spent at sea, you don't see it that calm even if there is no hurricane. Also, the edge of the storm would not be a right angle like that. Instead it would be barreling forward at a sharp angle. You can see how using Adobe Photoshop's Rubber Stamp Clone tool, they've created that edge to look more impressive.

Also, that doesn't look like an transatlantic tanker, the bow is too low and wouldn't handle the oncoming waves. Even if it was a transatlantic, it wouldn't be heading straight into a catastrophic hurricane.

It is impressive though.

I'll see if I can scrounge a picture of a minor squall from this summer so you can see what i mean.

Eric

It might be doctored but it does look to me like the kind of weather phenomenon you would find on the Great Lakes. The water could be that smooth before the front hit since there is no long fetch to cause waves. I've seen similar but not quite as ominous weather fronts on Lake Ontario.

If you were that close there would be very heavy seas, I lived North of the tiny town of Paradise MI for five years and was there the night the Fitzgerald went down, that sure looks like an ore boat to me........

The picture has been doctored, not a bad job, but certainly noticeable to anyone who uses the software enough...

Here's where they added the storm to an otherwise nice sunset picture...compare the line to the original above and it becomes realy noticeable.
