do YOU trust your airbags?
 

theres a thread going on in the integra forum i belong to about the safety of air bags. I would post the link but it is a strict members only forum so it wouldn't be of much benefit. I basically said i don't trust the airbags in my integra, and the only airbags i trust are those of a BMW, Mercedes, Volvo etc. Does anyone else feel the same in my thinking? not looking for support here, just other opinions from those with the upper end of the car spectrum(quality wise, not price wise). thanks,

Well, I don't know if the airbag in my 18 years old 560SEL would deploy or not if I get into an Godfobid accident. I don't have much choice in there. However, I probably trust the airbag in the 95 coupe to punch me in the face still better than hitting the steering wheel when needed. You are comparing a featherweight to a heaveyweight vehicle anyway. So, how airbag deployment could be a bit different too.

I trust all 6 of my airbags, and my parents trust all 8 of theirs, and my sister all 4 of hers. lol.

"Trust" them? Trust them to deploy as Mercedes designed? Yes. Mercedes may not be able to make a wiring harness or head gasket, but airbags made by MB and BMW are flawless.

Do I trust them to save my life? Not for a second. Airbags are not substitutes for seatbelts as some people seem to believe. They only increase your survival a couple percent over seatbelts on their own.

I can't stand that they have been made madatory by law. Many makers have crappy designs that deploy at low thresholds. Most makers don't use occupancy sensors and have needless deployments into empty seats. That just costs extra bucks to you when you do have a collision.

The" West Virgina Airbag" is much more reliable.

An airbag saved my life in a high-speed head-on collision. I was not wearing a seatbelt, but still escaped from a Stealth twin-turbo nearly unharmed. The other driver died on the scene despite the fact that his vehicle was twice the size of mine (an 80's Olds 88).

Say what you will about airbags, but an experience such as mine will doubtlessly color your opinion.

That is ancedotal evidence that is not supported by statistics. I am glad to see that in your particualr case, it worked. However, more troubling is that you were not wearing your seat-belt.

We just had an undercover state policeman killed when he went off the road and exited the vehicle before it came to rest. He was not wearing a seatbelt,,, was going, the police say, over 100 miles per hour, and was almost two times over the limit for DUI. He was also on duty at the time. I always wear my seat belt as does everyone else who is in my car.

i think you guys are misunderstanding the point of my question. We all know to wear seatbelts, it's stupid not to. I'm basically asking if you would trust the airbags of an economy type car. I know it's an acura, but i still consider my integra an economy car, and thus i don't really trust the effectiveness of the airbags in the car.

as Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) so eloquently put it:

"Do you feel lucky? ..."

On the other side of the coin, do you trust them not to deploy when they're not supposed to? An acquaintance had her airbags deploy while she was driving down the road a couple years ago in her Mistubishi 3000. Of course the airbags scared the heck out of her, causing her to crash the car. And by then the airbags were ineffective. Not a pretty scene, to be sure.

I think I read somewhere than only Mercedes-Benz has never had an unintentional airbag deployment.

Statistics pale when compared to experience. If a sibling dies from a rattlesnake bite, how impressed will you be by statistics indicating that rattlesnake bites are generally not fatal?

In my case, air bags simply did not require seat belts in order to deploy and work properly, due to the confining nature of the seats. That is obviously not the case with most vehicles.
