anyone ever heard of this - roach in ear?

The other morning around 4:30 am the wife woke up screaming that something had crawled into her ear. I took the flashlight and looked up in there and saw something but could not tell what it was, all the time the wife screaming/carrying on pretty bad. She said she could feel it against her ear drum. I took her to the emergency room and they poured water in her ear and pulled a bug out in two pieces. Possibly a medium sized roach - couldn't tell exactly what kind of bug it was.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Since that happened we have put roach motels throughout the house and have not seen anymore.

She was pretty freaked out too. Says it has effected her sleeping. The DR at the ER said that they see this about once a week.

If not a small roach, not to be confused with tree roaches or the Palmetto bugs as you might know them, it might also be an earwig.

There's been a substantial increase in bedbugs in the US in the past few years. It could be a bedbug. If it was, take immediate steps to eradicate them. Once they are established they are difficult to get rid of. One indication of their presence is small bites that itch intensely. They are usually about 3/8th of an inch long brownish or reddish colored.

Actually, earwigs are related to roaches, and are sometimes referred to as "vegetable roaches".

It happened to my . . .

mother many years ago when I was about 15yrs old! She woke up screaming (literally!) and my father thought she had bought the farm!

Of course, he didn't believe it and while she was screaming and carrying on, the damm thing came out. My father almost fainted!

It was an earwig (thus the name). As it turns out, it's a fairly common event.

Kerry, I heard that in an NPR story. Ick.

Worse, the measures you gotta take to kill the infestation are really expensive.

BTW engatwork, my wife had a tiny pharoah ant in her ear. It woke her from a sound sleep stomping and crashing through the ear canal. I got it out with tweezers.

Bots...disgusting. Sometime when looking to be thoroughly grossed-out see what you can find on tropical bots.

I took parasitology and micro in the same semester in 1975. It makes you extremely paranoid for at least a year.

Watch out for these little creatures. They crawl into your ear, mess with your reasoning and thought processing rendering you extremely susceptible to suggestion as they slowly devour your brain. They then emerge fully grown, and even more deadly.

Ooops, wait. We don't have to worry about that until the 23rd century!
