Doberman vs rottweiler vs pitt bull

For my next dog, I cannot make up my mind. Of the three, which would you pick and why...

1) Dobermans- for some reason, in james bond movies and jackie chan movies, resident evil, etc. the rich and wealthy people have them as guard dogs in there palaces and mansions. Why is it that dobermans are the "dog of choice" for the rich and classy?

2) rottweilers- my current dog and i love rotts. They are big and strong and with proper training can be very aggressive and protective. I would want to get a rott again just because of the sucess of my current dog.

3) Pitt bulls- lots of myth surrounding the "locking jaws", meanest of the mean dogs, etc. yet my pitt bull is not that mean to my opinon and my rott can take on multiple pitts in a fight (i have seen this first hand when neighbors pitts got in my yard). My rott also picks on my pitt.

Also pitt bulls (at least here in this area) has a reputation for guard dogs for crack houses, drug dealers, gang bangers "choice of dog". they are not hmm "classy" so to speak.

I dont know why people are so afraid of pitt bulls. A rottweiler can easily be twice the size of most pitts therefore they can jump up and attack your throat easier and can push you over onto the ground.

So what are your thoughts?

How about a jack russel or cocker spaniel?

All of those dogs sound scary.

My wife and I had a pit bull for over 10 years. During that time our dog NEVER barked...not even once! He was the nicest dog in the ENTIRE world! When my daughter was born the two became inseperable, we used to say the the dog was her brother, it was too cute to see the two of them together.
We loved that dog immesurably, and still miss him terribly.
That pit bull was the best pet we could have ever hoped for!

We have owned many different dogs then in the early 80's got our first bull terrier and will never have anything else.

I can only vote for the Doberman. It's the only one on your list that I've been around. Knew a family 25 years ago that had one. Awesome dog! Very bright and alert, very family-friendly, very foe-unfriendly

Although you stated you currently have a "rott", you are inquiring specifically about the "guard dog" breeds...are you in need of protection where you live?

There are certainly a lot of breeds that make good children's pets and loyal companions, but you asked about these three in particular.

Also some homeowners insurance companies maintain a list of breeds that are deemed uninsurable. It's unfair to say the least, but the media hype over fatal dog attacks by particular breeds helped to ensure this paranoia...

I wouldn't have any of them. For starters, the liability with them is too high, and your insurance company can pull your policy - regardless of how well you take care of the dogs.

You want a good guard dog? Great Pyrenees. They are VERY large dogs, rather formiddable looking to strangers, yet docile enough to not have to worry about your neighbours kid wandering into your yard. They do bark quite a bit at night. However, that is how a would be thief will know first hand that they are there. If they are STILL stupid enough to go in the yard, they WILL be greeted by a HUGE white mass running towards them at full speed. They typical pyr will weign in at least 100 pounds, so they have some power behind a protective response. I sleep very well at night with my Pyr in the back yard, and am looking at getting another one, which will be housebroken and trained, so he can stay in the house.

My brother has had two Irish Wolfhounds. Big lovable boobs, but they scare the heck out of people by their size.

On the other hand,.... I have a sweet, alert lab that barks with a loud, gruff voice when disturbed but would do little more than lick an intruder like a popsickle. He's loud enough to wake anybody.

I cut survey lines with a machete for a year or so while learning how to survey and got pretty handy with it. I have a "decorative" machete hanging on a wall in the front room. It was bought in Cartegena, Columbia and sits in a nicely tooled leather scabbard attached to a colorful woven wool belt. Its within handy reach of the front door. It'll shave my forearm.

You're absolutely right Kuan. The problem is that all dog owners are not good dog owners. Some are interested in imposing behavioral modifications to cause physical harm to people and/or other dogs. I've always figured if a man isn't man enough to take care of himself, than he should find a woman that can...

You are absolutely correct. Unfortunately the types of people that are attracted to some breeds has resulted in bad reputations for the particular breed. Due to this, those who are responsible lose once again.
