Skinned canines in freezer
Probe launched after restaurant find

By KEITH BRADFORD, EDMONTON SUN

Health officials have launched an investigation after the skinned carcasses of four canine animals - either coyotes or dogs - were found in a downtown restaurant freezer.

Edmonton Humane Society constables and environmental health officers removed the carcasses from the Panda Garden restaurant, 10507 Kingsway Ave., early yesterday after being tipped off by strip mall security guards.

"There were four canines, skinned and frozen solid.

"At this point we don't know if they are dogs or coyotes," said Capital Health environmental health officer Richard Reive, who thinks this is the first case of its kind in Edmonton.

"At first I was skeptical when I heard about it. And when I saw them, I was fairly surprised, to say the least."

The carcasses have been handed over to Alberta Fish and Wildlife officials, who are conducting an autopsy to determine what the animals are, and whether the meat is infected.

Edmonton Humane Society spokesman Melissa Boisvert said it's still not known where the animals are from, or where they were killed.

"We are shocked that a restaurant had dogs or canines in their freezer," she said. "But there's no evidence a dog has been served to anyone."

Reive said the carcasses are "uninspected meat," regardless of whether they turn out to be coyotes or dogs.

"The restaurant was open as of (Monday) but the restaurant is now closed, and the animals are gone," he said. "Uninspected meat is a health concern."

Anyone found guilty of contravening Section 19 of the food regulation section of the Public Health Act - which covers uninspected meat - can face a first-offence fine of $2,000, said Reive.

He was unable to contact the restaurant's owners yesterday.

Reive said the discovery of the canine carcasses is still under investigation, but it's too early to say whether charges will be laid.

The carcasses were found on the floor of the restaurant's walk-in freezer. Two were in black plastic garbage bags but the others were uncovered when he inspected the freezer, said Reive.

"They were skinned from nose to tail. The fur was still on the paws - that's the only spot."

Boisvert said that an Edmonton Humane Society investigation - which will focus on the treatment of animals - will get underway when it's known whether they are dogs.

"It's shocking. It's not something we expect to hear."

....for anyone who has ever wondered if the stories about why there are never dogs and cats around Asian resturants......are true......

If you frequent McDonald's, then some people (certainly not ME) would say you have likely eaten Australian Kangaroo.

Where else are the "beef" items less expensive than "chicken" items?

This reminds me of an old joke -- what do you call a Vietnamese man with at least 3 dogs?

A rancher!

With apologies to any Vietnamese members...

During one of Sir John Franklin's ill-fated attempts to find a northwest sea passage, his starving crew were treated to a strange-tasting meat brought back by a half-crazed hunter who had already gone out on two unsuccessfuly hunting trips, each time losing his companion. They were told it was wolf.....

Pretty much any fast food place. The grilled chicken sandwiches are usually much more expensive than the beef ones.

The kangaroo comment is pretty stupid. If the wrong person heard a comment like that, the McDonald's Corp would/could clean their clock. The people that slander McDonald's or persue frivilous suits usually lose the shirt off their back. However, one in a million suits hit the jackpot and some stupid jury makes a big award. The awards are usually greatly reduced but they do pay out about once a decade.

McDonald's protects their trademark more than any corporation that I have ever seen and they doggedly persue people that are dragging their name through the mud. You think the music industry is tough. Mess with McDonald's and see what happens.

So what's the big deal abouting eating a coyote?I swear on the star of my 74 240D (factory original) that about five years ago I shot a coyote that had come in our yard to lunch on our cats.It was a healthy female and while skinning it I noticed the meat had a plesant odor,so I fried some it was very good so I made a big stew from the rest of it for a pot luck all that had the nerve to try it liked it.

Last winter I skinned a 135 pound goat killing Cougar for a neighbore (spelling intended)he kept the pelt I got the meat.I had read in many old journals that it was the perfered meat of many mountain men and after many dinners later there is no dought they were right the only thing that comes close was a Feral pig I ate when we lived in FLA.
Also tried Bobcat it had good flavor but was much tougher than Cougar...........

Canine is still secretly served in many asian countries, where they are less sensitive about the western concept of "pets." We all have our cultural biases with regard to foods and preparation styles.

. . . and now for something completely different. Back in Philadelphia, a rumour was spread that "Pats King of Steaks" was using horsemeat in their cheesesteak sandwiches. The original "Pat" took out a newspaper ad, offering a big reward to anyone that could prove that Pats used horsemeat. Sales of their sandwiches skyrocketed as would be culinary detectives and horse lovers tried to collect the reward.

Of course you know who "started the rumor!"
