I'm sure that typical Lexus headlights (or MOST cars' headlights) are better than the DOT lights on a W126, but I always thought the W126 wipers were cool and very effective.

The single arm 124, 201, 202, etc. wiper on the other hand, is cool but the effectiveness is debatable.

It's supposedly a visibility/safety issue...the law regulates the opacity of front-seat windows and of course the windshield only. Back windows and rear windows don't matter. (Notice the driver's window on a limo is NOT tinted that darkly)

They're okay, but IMO not as effective as regular pivot-about-the-lower-left-corner wipers. Of course MB did the opposite in the W140 and the driver side wiper pivots about the center leaving the upper left corner to the extending arm. Why? I'll take W108 wipers any day. No need to see through the rear view mirror.

Mercedes can't seem to make up it's mind about wipers.

126 wipers are OK, but the passenger side blade follows the driver's blade which has already swept most of the passenger side free of water. This leads to stuttering as the pass blade is wiping what is essentially a dry windshield on the initial stroke.

I Prefer the 140 design as it clears the DRIVER'S side immediatley, which is probably the reasons for the change sixto speaks of.

I just took off the right side wiper on my W126/SD. One less blade to replace, and I don't notice any difference in visability.

Acctually I got a $250 ticket for them..so I had to take them off.... but I like it better like this...
Albert, the lack of tint on your windows means that its easier for others to admire all the work you've done to the interior of your car.........

Heres a pic of a nice E500 in response to the "should I buy a Lexus " question

I like the W126 wiper blades because as you are driving the W126 going down the road you do not see two protruding ugly black wipers. The wipers are concealed (they're also thin), and that shows a bit of class.

One thing I don't like about the new Mercedes is that the wipers protrude and are big, fat, and highly noticeable. Mercedes went backwards from their single arm blade design with their new E-Class W211.

Lexus my ass!

Only one thing WRONG with a Lexus. It's not a Mercedes! Everybody uses the phrase," It's the Mercedes of ( fill in blank)". Meaning that whatever they're talking about is the best because it's being compared to a Mercedes. My beauty 1989 420 SEL.

I never understood Mercedes thinking when it came to wipers.

W114/115: dual arm, pivoting at outer edges of windshield, leaving "rearview mirrow area" unwiped.
W116, R107, W126: dual arm, one arm follows the other to a "V" shape
W123: dual arm, similar to what you see on 99% of cars today
early W201: single arm, non articulated, with a "mini wiper" blade at the bottom
W124, W201, W202, W210, W208, R129: single arm, articulated
W140: dual arm, articulated on driver's side.
R170, A163: dual arm, same as W123.
W220, W203, R230, W211: dual arm, same concept as W123 but with a eccentric pivot on the passenger side arm.

Ahh regarding the vipers

- I too would love to understand the reasoning behind them.

Especially on my S500 from -96 (w140), the wipers went opposit which I thought was really clever, as they this way spend most of their visible time out of the drivers sight. They both wipe to the right.

Why did they abandom this principle???

Most likely the use of only one wiper motor - cheaper production costs.

Regarding wipers, I've seen many complaints about the articulated wipers smearing the water around instead of clearing it off. I've personally had a W201, W124, and W210 and never found the wipers to be a problem as long as the blades were in good condition. Actually, I prefer the monowiper because it clears more of the windshield and mostly because it makes people go "wow!" Anyway, I think MB is responding to customer demand on this one, because plenty of people do compain about the articulated wiper.
