Everyone had a great time Thanks for the photos guys.
I only made three runs. For the record my reaction times were 1.065, .803, and .834 (.500 is perfect). My best time for the stock CLK55 was 13.439 @ 105.79! Now I'll have to practice more and find some Hoosiers for the CLK! Donnie/Cap'n/Thrillbilly/Bill....what time did you leave? |

Having a bunch of Mercedes show up at a Buick Grand National meet (they invited us) and post times like the C55's 11.54 ET absolutely SHOCKED everyone there. Many would come over to the area where Cap'n had staked out and just stare at the spread of MBs parked with their hoods up. The caravan left MB Autowerks about 9am for the trip down. I had brought several FRS radios with me so we could stay in contact for the drive to the track. No crazy stories to report for the drive down except when Matt (red C36) went FLYING past us unexpectedly....he had planned to meet us there, so we were surprised to see him on the road. We didn't see him again until we pulled into the track. The two silver CLK55s operated as the 'bookends' for the caravan...Bill led and I carried up the rear. We got to the track about 11:30 after a quick stop for a bite to eat at McDonalds. Low and behold! What was parked in the Mickey Dees lot, but a W210 E55 with a temporary tag no less I walked up to the car (driver still inside) and knocked on the window. I invited him to join us, but he was heading North to deliver the new acquisition to his son in the Atlanta area. I passed one of Bill's MB Autowerks cards to him and suggested that he check out this site too. Back on the road...we pull into the strip and fork over the $20 entry fee. Cap'n greets us and points us to the direction of "MB Autowerks - South", a large area for us to park and he had set up the canopy and grill. We all get parked and meet Thrillbilly (true relation with Roy Acuff folks!). We 'unpack' and are dying to get on the strip. Honestly, I was lazy...I didn't feel like unloading my trunk, spare, or anything 'cause my day was about having fun (not serious drag racing). Heck, I even ran with 35 psi in the rear tires...not the most effective way to lower the ET Donnie, Bill, Thrillbilly, Cap'n and Matt all offered advice on how to launch. I obviously didn't pay attention as my first reaction time was 1.065! Really BAD! It improved later with two more launches. My next run, I turned off traction control and let-her-rip. Times dropped and I cracked a smile. I was happy. I'd beaten the 13.5 I was interested in running. Now it was pure "play time". Matt (red C36) was gracious the two previous times we ran and I said "hop in"...he parked his AMG and grabbed his helmet. As long as we ran slower than a 14, they would let a passenger ride along. My third and final run was with Matt as co-pilot. After the run, we went back to "MB Autowerks - South" for some grub. Cap'n generously had brought brats and beer and all the fixings...PLUS he hauled a grill there to boot! Capn's wife is really nice too. I ended up leaving a little early for a commitment I had back in Atlanta that evening, so there are many more good stories (I'm sure) after I left p.s. Two BMWs showed up Friday (according to the organizer), but both went home as they broke Last edited by el presidente; 11-12-2003 at 07:28 AM. |
