With all of these hazing cases going on what was your school experiences like. I was never hazed but I was on the in the popular crowd and a computer geek at the same time, so many of my friends were geeks that had incidents with knuckleheads, and I often stuck up for them and received suspensions and a black eye as a result.

Personally if I saw someone hitting my child I would frickin lose it and smash their head in, then the parents. How do parents of these idiots have any respect for their children while they are treating other humans like this unprovoked?

Hazing is just plain stupid. I was(am) a geek too, and had to carefully plan my trips to the boys room, ect, all thru junior high, and the start of high school. There should be a "No Tolerance" rule in schools for it.

I was a geek in every sense of the word...short, scrawny, book-wormy (but not necessarily with the academic prowess that should have accompanied), weird name, unathletic, undesireable to the ladies, different ethnic background...all the makings of a fifth wheel.

Unfortunately, I also had a BIG mouth, and while I had the option to go through school relatively unnoticed, I chose not to! So I constantly "wrote checks that my body couldn't cash" and paid for it dearly!

Probably spawned some depression and self-esteem issues that eventually surfaced and is a constant struggle in my daily life.

But there were several unprovoked hazing incidents, and if anyone was a target, I would surely be one of them...and was!

The parents were either uninformed, in denial, or just didn't care. Some actually applauded their son's (or daughter's) antics as "life experiences"...go figure.

Anyway, I kinda went on the extreme side and tried to make up for my shortcomings by rearing my daughter into the antithesis of what I was growing up. So now, I have an attrative little girl who's athletic, popular, superior in academics, but most of all, friendly...

...hopefully, her social circles will not choose to instill their brand of subjugation when she gets older...

My high school situation was exactly the same. Yes - I was a different ethnic background than most of the school 'cause the majority of students (literally!) were Hispanic.

However, I kept my mouth shut, and other than some smart alecks pushing me while I was trying to read during lunch, I didn't get too much grief, and people even started to tolerate me somewhat around the middle of my junior year...

IMHO there's no place for hazing in schools.

Is there a place for "hazing" anywhere? We live in a society of heirarchial structures and hazing seems to be a hidden topic in the grownup world. Here are some examples:

1) Naval personnel making their first cruise across the equator meet up with "King Neptune" onboard in a hazing ritual.

2) It is the "tradition" in the Supreme Court that the junior justice in our nation's highest court serve the water and otherwise attend to the other justices during their closed door meetings. This tradition was disregarded when Justice O'Connor, the first woman on the Court, was in her freshman term.

There's a difference between alot of the harmless hazing that goes on, and that which is down right uncalled for. Where to draw the line, I dunno. But if it involves being just plain cruel and mean, especially causing physical harm to a person, it's definately not needed.

Me too. Pledge quarter was very interesting.

By this time most people are at least 18 and know what they're getting into. This is different than the bully type hazing that goes on in high school.

I went to school in southern California and in Ohio and I have never heard of "hazing" untill seeing it on the news. I am not sure if its as popular now as it was back then.

I went to a parochial boarding school for my Jr and Sr high school years. Yes, there were things almost all the new kids had to go thru'- sort of baptism by fire, as well as a bunch of childish stuff like nicknames, cliques, as well as the occasional fisticuffs. However, you did move up the hierarchy the longer you were there and because of the 'Respect your elders' practice you got a chance to see, and also inflict on to the newbies what you suffered a few years earlier- keeping the tradition going.....

Its funny how after college, I went to work at a large Big Six accounting firm. We were classified into groups (first year staff, second yr staff, first yr senior, 2nd yr senior, 3rd yr heavy senior, manager etc) . The first yr staff were the ones carrying all the supplies out to the clients, did the photocopying, vouching of invoices etc - basically all the dreaded menial tasks. To build up character was the oft mentioned excuse employed by the higher ups. In a way it reminded me of my boarding years.

I know this is off-topic, but I have to ask...other than hazing and keg parties, what purpose do fraternities and sororities serve?

I ask 'cause I'm of the college age and have yet to see any need to be a part of one...

Fraternity friends I knew would tout the friendship and brotherhood that would extend beyond the college years...

...later in my adult life I would have acquaintances that belonged to a fraternity or sorority that had no contact with any of their brethren nor even tried to get connected with the local chapter.

I guess it was yet another way to develop yet another sophisticated "clique" in an environment that can prove intimidating and overwhelming to an incoming freshman, eager to find a social niche in the college fabric...

i think theres a difference between the high-school bullying that is being talked about and genuine hazing. hazing is something that the hazee agrees to, for one reason or another, or to be accepted. bullying is just pushing people around because you can.

for the record, all national fraternities have strict, no-tolerance anti-hazing policies. i think mostly because they dont want to get sued. even though it is still very common, there is a strong effort being made to phase-out hazing in the greek system, which is really the only way you can get rid of this kind of 'tradition'. because if one guy gets hazed, he thinks everyone after him should too.

for the most part though, fraternity hazing is harmless, but if the national fraternity condones it in any way, they are very easily found liable if something bad does happen, and it always eventually seems to.

this high school incident in long island is absolutely outrageous though, these guys shold all go to jail.

Was I bullyed in school? Yes. My school is divided up into many groups goths, jocks, etc. I know people from all different groups. My best friend is extremly popular now and some of my other friends were never popular. I was bullyed pretty bad 6 years ago in seventh grade. But I found out if I stick up for myself, the bully's would go away. The funny thing is I am friends now with the bully that made my life misreable in 7th grade! This year is my senior year in highschool and no problems so far. I just do my own thing and am left alone. The High School on the other side of town is haveing some big problems with a skinhead type group called the "White Wolves"
