Peter,
Are you one of those guys I told to f*&# off? It appears you took my questions/comments too personal. I realize that low prices are tied in to loss control. It just seems that a lot of stores are going in the same direction. I don't mind them checking, so long as it doesn't take up more of my time than needed. My biggest problem is when there are 30 people standing in line and one person checking. BTW, I haven't shopped at Costco since then, and will only do so when convenient. I don't mind paying higher prices for better/faster service. We all have better things to do than standing on yet another line to check if I pay for stuff. Why do they have cameras anyway? In response to those who think I am too stressed, you are probably right. I will be the first to admit it. And I am working on it. Some people happen too work/perform better under stress and I am one of them. Not by choice mind you, just turned out that way. I'll try and bring more to the table next time Peter.

I didn't say anything about single man's white T-shirts, I said they didn't have any plain white t-shirts. It seems to me that most men wear these. Not having them seems a bit ridiculous.
I don't shoplift, but I have read that most "shrinkage" comes from inside: employees taking stuff home with them. Making people wait half an hour to check out is deeply annoying. I mean to pay for the merchandise, not to have some clown check the receipt. That doesn't take long, it's just as pain in the butt. My experience is that the stores that check receipts charge no less than those that don't check. I think I will ask Costco for my money back. Thanks.

How about a "stressed out, hispanic/white mans t-shirt?"
I could sure use one.

Black Mercedes,
FWIW, been to Alberta a couple of times and the people there sure are friendly. I love it. In fact, my wife has cousins over there. I just don't understand how they can swim in that cold water.

I do not find it annoying at all. For places with large volume of shoppers like Costco, you need to check receipts to catch frauds.
It's in the interest of all other shoppers. Businesses can't sell at a discount if they lose money because of frauds. When I still lived in Vietnam, I always thought (like most people there) that people in the US do not even have to close their door at night because it's very safe there, and all people are rich. Oh well, the reality is way beyond imagination. I think the neighborhood where I lived in Vietnam was safer than many places here in the US. People there thought the US is the paradise with all rich people. Now I have to work 12-13 hours per day for at least 6 months in a year without any overtime pay because I'm a salaried employee buried under mountains of projects. Time goes by so fast when living in the US, because you have to spend too much time at work. Just a wink and another weekend is coming. Anyway, I still want to live in the US more than anywhere else Eric |

Lighten up.
If they did not have security, people would steal them blind amd you know it. I see this kind of surveillance (sp) in almost every store I enter. I have learned to ignore it unless it gets egregious. It isn't going to change. Even the stores where you think that they are not looking ...check the cameras in the overhead. Ever hear the voice in walmart tell security where to point the cameras and record the action. The theft pros make it hard for the rest of us. Lighten up and let the people do their jobs. They don't know you so its not personal. P.s. You did say it. Go back and read your post.

You guys that complain about the extra security checks obviously live in nice suburban areas.
In distressed communities, its commonplace. Pump gas at the station then go inside and pay later? HAH! No such luck! Metal detectors in public schools, bars on the windows of local retailers, reinforced steel columns in front of grocery and department stores spaced so that you can't run off with the shopping carts or drive a truck through the facade! Everyday stuff in many neighborhoods. Not saying that your community must become a war zone anytime soon, but you can blame your local bored adolescents and klepto housewives (and men too) for the change in policies...

I grew up in a depressed area(Newark, NJ) and have lived or worked in all types of areas and understand the difference.
My problem, specifically, is having to wait to prove that I have paid for something. I haven't shoplifted since I was 15(38 now) and it bugs the crap out of me to have to go through the aforementioned "receipt checking". Gotta go relieve some stress.

Yesterday, I dropped my ML off at the dealer for it's annual inspection and an oil change. I waited in line to obtain my loaner vehicle (usually C240s), and a woman who had made a last minute appointment discovered that there were no more MBs to loan out so she had to settle for a Camry. ![]() Boy! Did she pitch a fit! Are we so pompous these days as to get riled up over small inconveniences? To put it in perspective...how many bombs blew up in your town this morning?

Guys, I really think you guys got it all wrong. I don't blow up at the slightest thing, in fact I am probably one of the more laid back people you would meet.
Of course there are certain things that set me off more than others, that happens to be one of them. I appreciate the attempts at counseling, however I am far from being on the edge. Example: Had one van blow and engine this week. Getting fixed as I type. My SDL is having a new steering box put in. My wifes Jeep just got 4 new tires and a $200.00 ignition switch put. Another company van is getting painted after yet another drivers accident. All this is happening these first 4 days and I am calm as I have no control over the situation. When I have to wait at Costco to get in, then wait to shop, then wait to pay, then wait to prove that I paid, it get's a little a frustrating. If that is not obvious to you all, then maybe you guys might have too much time on your hands. What I am ultimately pissed off at is, other people's influence on my time, and my putting myself in that situation to begin with. I ommited a small detail about me telling the people to f&*( off. It wasn't the actual receipt checker person, it was the manager who explained to me that I have to abide by their rules to keep shopping there. I told him the policy was ridiculous, he thought different and suggested I go someplace else in the future which I now do. BTW, now they have receipt checkers at Home Depot too, what's next, McDonalds? " Excuse me sir, can I check to see if you have the right burger you just paid for? I want to make sure it's a single and not a double. I already ate it........ want me to throw up? That is extreme of course, but I contend that for the most part, people want to get through the day, pay their bills, take care of their families, etc... w/o having to prove that you in fact own/paid for something. An earlier post said it best, If I feel distrusted at a place, I won't go there. That is my new policy. That and anger management.

I don't particularly care for the receipt checks. However, I do understand why, and in Costco's case, I accepted this when I bought my memership.
Several years ago, I went to Fry's Electronics to buy components to build a computer. One of the items in the pile did not get scanned. I didn't notice the item not on the list, but was initially happy to see the lower than expected total. On exit, the "inspector" found the unscanned item. I went back and paid for it seperately. In their case, that 30 seconds of time saved them several hundred dollars in lost merchandise. Unfortunately in today's society, this type of loss prevention is also necessary to cut back on theft. I guess you can vote with your wallet and shop elsewhere, but in my case, I'd rather not have the higher prices to pay in the store to offset those losses. |
