Annoying security at Cotco, BJ's and .....
 
now, Home Depot.

What is the story with these stores checking your receipts before you leave the store now?

Costco claims it's becasue they are looking for cashier errors which is a load of crap.

My problem with it is that I have already waited in line to park, checkout and now to leave with my purchases. No way will they infringe on my right to come and go as I please.

I for one never wait and go around the line and walk out, forcing the people to come get me. At which point they tell me that I have to wait, store policy. I tell them to f#*& off.

I explain that I cannot be forced to wait with items that I have paid for, and that if they have proof that I stole something, to go ahead and arrest me.

BJ's employess have told me that it is part of the membership agreement that I signed. I then tell them to f*#@ off again and leave.

What are your opinions on the subject?

Ran into that a few times.

The people who were checking the reciepts at my local Wally World, were about 90 years old. They took as much time checking my reciept as a local yocal copper takes filling out a ticket.

I agree with you, it is (fill in the blank with vulgar, blasphemous adjective) nuts!

One of many reasons I don't Wally-world.

I'm never going back to Best Buy. Same reason.

F***'em.

I buy mom-n-pop or internet whenever possible.

However, I like Lowes and H-D. Both offer excellent customer service and must train people to memorize stock locations. They always know where stuff is.

Prices are good, too.

I must comment on a few of your statements.
First I also do not like the lines at Cosco HD etc. They do it because our society has no responcibility for its actions. People feel it is there right to steel things.

Your statement and understaning of the law is poor.
Under the law you have a right to come and go as you please. But the store is their private property. By entering the store you agree to comply with all local and civil laws and agree to their rules and conditions. If you do not like stock security measures, shop somewhere else.

This is true, innocent until proven guilty. And you do have the right to this freedom. But they have the right to press charges
if you have stolen something. Or show good probable cause that you may have stolen something. Again they had better be right about the charges or face a lawsuit. At the end of all of this they can refuse to allow you into the store.


You seem to be very stressed and this seems to be a way for you to experss your frustration. I also feel this at times. Try to slow down, take life a little easier and be kind to yourself. The ONLY one who will suffer from your outbursts will be you. The large company will not even flinch an eye and your stress level will get higher and higher until your the one damaged.

These are the rules for living in our society today. And it will only get worse. My profession has changed dramatically since 9/11. I'm an Airline Pilot.

You're completely right.

I choose not to transact business with people who behave that way and do choose business with people who offer me the assumption of trust.

Its simple, really. I haven't stolen anything since I stole a Hershey Bar from Shackleford's on Highland when I was 9. I'll be damned if I'm going to trade with people who don't trust me.

It is obvious that you patronize these types of stores for great prices. "GREAT PRICES" are directly tied to loss control, or theft prevention. I dont mind being checked at the door, and the attitude you display when you are stopped is deplorable!
If you dont like it shop somewhere else, and dont waste your time whining about it.
I hope you bring something more worthwhile to the forum!

Unfortunately, we ALL pay for the actions of a few individuals who engage in shoplifting and outright theft!

We pay higher retail prices for a lot of items that could be had far cheaper because of theft.

We also wait in long lines at airport security because of the actions of a few individuals...so are you no longer going to use air travel as a result?

There will be more and more stores adopting this "receipt checking" policy at their doors, when certain folks can't find success at the Costcos, Walmarts, and Home Depots and move on to other "Targets"...

I used to work for a Dept. store chain where 2-3% shrink was considered normal and acceptable. This is a store which did 2 million on each sale day between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Can you imagine losing 40-60k in revenue in one day? At 2 billion a year that's 20-30 million a year.

How easy is it to steal? One day, some guy walked into the housewares department and picked up a $300 Kitchenaid mixer and took it to the cashier. He said he wanted to return it for cash. Of course he had no receipt. The cashier was forced by company policy to issue him a voucher. The reason being that lawsuits are far too expensive just in case you're wrong.

This guy, if he were smart enough, could dig through garbage cans and obtain receipts. He would then go to stores with the receipts and obtain "refunds" by picking up the item off the shelf and bringing it to the service desk. Easy $300. Plus the tax he didn't pay of course.

The implied but not stated observation is that more theft occurs in high volume stores and receipt checking is a form of loss prevention.

At least they are not as thorough as going into federal buildings (speaking of high volume stores), where you are subject to both metal detectors and a hand pat down. They can do this on the way out, too.... Tell the fed cops to f***k themselves and see what they do.... ;)

Plantman, you seem kind of stressed....

‘Course the other side of the story (as at least one member might point out) is that since the stores are corrupt, their only recourse is to protect their corrupt nature by adding security rather than remove the corruption and just give everything away.

I joined Costco because their ads suggested that i coukld save lots of money.

This has not turned out to be the case. They just don't sell much of anything I need. I don't need 48 rolls of paper towels or 40 bananas, and many of their food brands are much more expensive than what is available in Publix and other supermarkets, where they don't make you buy humongous quantities of stuff either.

last time I want there to buy some white T-shirts and a bucket of Meow mix. They had decided not to sell the Meow Mix anymore and had not a single white man's T-shirt in any size.

The checkout lines were 20 people long, but only two registers were open.

And, yes, after waiting interminably to check out behind fifteen women, each who seemed to be stocking provisions for her own private Bahama for the entire year, having some clown insisting on checking my receipt for the one inkjet cart I bought was too much, so I put in in my pocket, and was not asked to show anything. My theory is that if I paid for it, there isn't a damned thing they can do to me., except piss me off.

My membership was wasted. I should have pissed it away on Lotto tickets. I could have bought gas for less, but my cars are both Diesels.

Richard, your membership fee is not gone. Go back to Costco and explain that you tried it, don't like it, and they'll give you a refund.

I like shopping at Costco, for various reasons. I want to buy large quantities of some things, and Costco has that down pat. You have to watch the prices, though! Some things are terrific buys, and some things are not.

Costco pays their workers very well. A friend of mine is a manager with Costco, and I was shocked at how much even the cashiers make. That's great! I see the same people at Costco year in and year out. That also says something. Low turnover means a decent employer.

As to the issue of checking you at the door, our Costco's are very fast at this, and I have been checked a few times where the cashier has "double scanned" something or missed a coupon. In those cases, I was happy.

But, anyway, it boils down to time or money. How do you want to pay for the shoplifting? Do you want the retailer to have easy "out" access and slightly higher prices, or do you want to spend some time at the door and have lower prices? This is NOT a rhetorical question. It's up to each consumer to make up their mind.
