This weekend I put the snow plow blade on the lawn mower and had fun playing with it.

One of the elk wanted to help with the snow plow assembly!

After the plow fun, I took the season’s first 10 mile bike ride over compact snow and ice. A great and sometimes thrilling experience

Thanks for the comments!

We do feed the critters occasionally. For reasons we’ll never know, the elk just love the area by our house. I'm guessing that they follow more or less fixed patterns and just as the mom elk bring their kids to the area (there were 9 baby elk this year) they have been coming around for-ever. On that point, I spoke with one of my neighbors this weekend – he’s lived in the area for 30 years, lucky guy! And he said as long as he’s been there, the elk love the area.

They hang out in-mass at our place one or two days a week (the elk, not the neighbors). Most of the rest of the time they are within a few blocks. What is interesting is that while obviously friendly, they are selective. A few weeks ago we were burning some fallen branches while the girls were hanging out, Two neighbors walked up to say hi and enjoy the fire. The fire pit is in a corner of the property away from where the elk like to stay. When the neighbors showed up, the girls all headed to the back of the property. After the neighbors left, most of the elk came back. I felt so special!

Hey Rick even though the tractor has a cup holder, it is not quite complicated enough to be a MB. Thankfully! But at least it uses synthetic oil!

Fall? Not yet - finding some wood to knock on. Actually this year there is already more snow and ice than last. I just ordered a studded tire & wheel combo for the front of the bike from this place. http://store.yahoo.com/webmountainbike/nokstudbikti.html The rear already has a good knobby.

It is actually pretty easy to ride on ice. A bike doesn’t have the effects of torque pushing it sideways. Directional stability is challenged by ruts and soft spots but as long as you relax and don’t over compensate, and don’t go over about 8 mph it is more fun and exhilarating than threatening. Of course more control is better and that’s why the studded bike tire is on the way.

I was gonna ski Thursday and Friday but my knee has gotten sore so I might only go Friday. BTW, I went to Jackson a long time ago and really loved the place. I bought a leather sun visor when there and still use it almost every day. The visor is about 30 years old! When you go, be sure to get some pix for the rest of us!
