Range Rover

Was thinking about about possibly getting an older G Wagen but as they are few and far between and prices are high for me. I looked at Range Rovers on Ebay sure no lack of them. Any members have any thought about them ,strong and weak points,MPG, patrs.ect.can't belive for an expensive new vehicle how little a ten to twelve year old one goes for..............

Range Rovers, like most British cars, look completely cool and have an air of sophistication about them. I have never had one, but friends of mine have, and I understand two things:

1. Little things go wrong and you have to keep on top of them constantly.

2. The transmissions suck.

I also understand the Defender 90 is a kick-ass ride, but is not particularly capable of anything a CJ can't do. It just looks cooler doing it.

I have a 94 Range Rover with 98000 miles. Like orkrist said, little things do go wrong quite frequently. For an older model like mine, you can expect to spend around 2 grand a year in maintenance and repairs (if you go through the dealer for every little thing). However, if you are looking at a newer model, say a 99 or newer with bosch electronics and a decent warranty, they can be half way reliable. I've never heard anything bad in particular about rover transmissions (they're made by ZF) but I have heard of the occassional transfer case failure (mostly from owners who haven't ever shifted the thing into low range). If you plan to work on the vehicle yourself, an older model could be okay, just don't expect MB-like reliability. In regard to a CJ being as capable as a D90, it would have to be a pretty heavily modified CJ that could match a Defender in off road performance and sheer durability.

My uncle has 4 Rovers... 1 Range and 3 Land's

He loves them, but keep in mind he is an offshore oil rig designer:D who loves to tinker. Plan on doing some of that yourself.;) I remember as a child getting stuck in a riverbed for a bit once with one of the Land Rovers, but we made it out safely, great fun. He even took one of them to Africa with him on safari; as a rule they are pretty darn rugged, they'll run on just about anything you put in them!
